Before the Civil War, lawyers learned their trade primarily through apprenticeship and self-directed study. By the end of the 19th century, the modern legal education system which was developed primarily by Dean Christopher Langdell at Harvard was in place: a bachelor's degree was required for admission to the new model law school, and a law degree was promoted as the best preparation for admission to the bar. William P. LaPiana provides an in-depth study of the intellectual history of the transformation. 588 0 Print version record. 590 eBooks on EBSCOhost|bEBSCO eBook Subscription Academic Collection - North America 650 0 Law|xStudy and teaching|zUnited States|0https://id.loc.gov /authorities/subjects/sh2008106829|xHistory.|0https:// id.loc.gov/authorities/subjects/sh99005024 650 7 Law|xStudy and teaching.|2fast|0https://id.worldcat.org/ fast/993829 650 7 History.|2fast|0https://id.worldcat.org/fast/958235 650 7 Law.|2homoit|0https://homosaurus.org/v3/homoit0000702 651 7 United States.|2fast|0https://id.worldcat.org/fast/1204155 653 0 Law|aProfessional education|aHistory 653 0 United States 655 4 Electronic books. 655 7 History.|2fast|0https://id.worldcat.org/fast/1411628 776 08 |iPrint version:|aLaPiana, William P.|tLogic and experience.|dNew York : Oxford University Press, 1994 |w(DLC) 93021928 856 40 |uhttps://rider.idm.oclc.org/login?url=http:// search.ebscohost.com/login.aspx?direct=true&scope=site& db=nlebk&AN=288550|zOnline eBook.
