Summary |
A portrait of Siegfried Bing, a little-known art dealer, who initiated Art Nouveau and Japanese art in the West Art dealer, German patron of the arts and porcelain manufacturer, Siegfried Bing moved to Paris in 1854 where he remained for the rest of his life. He was buried at the Père Lachaise cemetery in 1905. Without him Art Nouveau would never have existed as we know it. To start with the name: it was he who invented it by christening his vast shop-gallery in the rue de Provence that later became the international centre for this artistic trend of which he was the instigator, producer, art dealer, manufacturer and ideologist. Siegfried Bing was also the first Westerner to have been so fascinated by Japanese art that he spent more than one year in Japan and brought back a huge treasure trove (prints and a variety of objects) that he acquainted many artists with, including Vincent Van Gogh. The creation of the Bing Pavilion at the Universal Exhibition of 1900 in Paris was the crowning achievement of this art dealer who became a trend-setter: his collection inspired all the arts throughout Europe and the United States. He was what is commonly referred to as a patron of the arts. |
