This study explores the effects of this epistemological blankness in fin de siècle literature, and its impact upon early Modernist culture, through the emerging discipline of psychoanalysis and the debt that Freud owed to African exploration. The chapters examine: representations of Black Africa in missionary writing and Rider Haggard's narratives on Africa; cartographic tradition in Conrad's Heart of Darkness and Jung's Memories, Dreams, Reflections; and mesmeric fiction, such as Richard Marsh's The Beetle, Robert Buchanan's The Charlatan and George du Maurier's Trilby. As Robbie McLaughlan demonstrates, it was the late Victorian 'best- seller' which merged an arcane Central African imagery with an interest in psychic phenomena."--Publisher's website. 588 0 Print version record. 590 eBooks on EBSCOhost|bEBSCO eBook Subscription Academic Collection - North America 648 7 19th century|2fast 648 7 1800 - 1899|2fast 650 0 English literature|y19th century|xHistory and criticism. |0https://id.loc.gov/authorities/subjects/sh2008102754 650 0 Adventure and adventurers in literature.|0https:// id.loc.gov/authorities/subjects/sh85001068 650 0 Popular culture|xHistory|0https://id.loc.gov/authorities/ subjects/sh2012100015|y19th century.|0https://id.loc.gov/ authorities/subjects/sh2002012475 650 7 English literature.|2fast|0https://id.worldcat.org/fast/ 911989 650 7 Adventure and adventurers in literature.|2fast|0https:// id.worldcat.org/fast/797453 650 7 Popular culture.|2fast|0https://id.worldcat.org/fast/ 1071344 650 7 History.|2fast|0https://id.worldcat.org/fast/958235 650 7 Discoveries in geography.|2fast|0https://id.worldcat.org/ fast/894950 651 0 Africa|xIn literature.|0https://id.loc.gov/authorities/ subjects/sh2007100686 651 0 Africa|xDiscovery and exploration.|0https://id.loc.gov/ authorities/subjects/sh2008114111 651 7 Africa.|2fast|0https://id.worldcat.org/fast/1239509 655 4 Electronic books. 655 7 Criticism, interpretation, etc.|2fast|0https:// id.worldcat.org/fast/1411635 655 7 History.|2fast|0https://id.worldcat.org/fast/1411628 776 08 |iPrint version:|aMcLaughlan, Robert.|tRe-imagining the 'dark continent' in fin de siècle literature.|dEdinburgh : Edinburgh University Press, ©2012|z9780748647156 |w(OCoLC)816150037 830 0 Edinburgh critical studies in Victorian culture.|0https:// id.loc.gov/authorities/names/no2011062709 856 40 |uhttps://rider.idm.oclc.org/login?url=http:// search.ebscohost.com/login.aspx?direct=true&scope=site& db=nlebk&AN=530743|zOnline eBook.
