The authors explore this moral drama as a case study of religiously motivated political action. (The perpetrators identified with Gideon, the Old Testament slayer of those who sacrificed firstborn infants to Baal.) Their analysis sheds light on the violent wing of the anti-abortion movement. Placing anti-abortion violence in the context of social movement theory, the authors conclude that persons who are predisposed toward such behavior are likely to be working-class males under age 35, socially isolated from countervailing attitudes. Religious fundamentalists, they warn, will continue to utilize violence in reaction to such subjects as pornography, homosexuality, sex education, equality for females, and prayer in public schools. For this book the authors conducted interviews with local activists on both sides of the abortion issue. They attended the Pensacola trial and interviewed local religious fundamentalists, personnel of clinics throughout the United States that have been subjected to arson or bombing, and, when possible, persons who have been tried and convicted of those offenses. 588 0 Print version record. 590 eBooks on EBSCOhost|bEBSCO eBook Subscription Academic Collection - North America 650 0 Abortion|xReligious aspects|xChristianity.|0https:// id.loc.gov/authorities/subjects/sh2007100484 650 0 Pro-life movement|zUnited States.|0https://id.loc.gov/ authorities/subjects/sh2008110058 650 0 Bombings|0https://id.loc.gov/authorities/subjects/ sh85015475|zFlorida|zPensacola|0https://id.loc.gov/ authorities/names/n79094279-781|vCase studies.|0https:// id.loc.gov/authorities/subjects/sh99001484 650 0 Terrorism|xReligious aspects|xChristianity.|0https:// id.loc.gov/authorities/subjects/sh2010116153 650 0 Violence|xReligious aspects|xChristianity.|0https:// id.loc.gov/authorities/subjects/sh2008113262 650 7 Abortion|xReligious aspects|xChristianity.|2fast|0https:// id.worldcat.org/fast/794623 650 7 Pro-life movement.|2fast|0https://id.worldcat.org/fast/ 1077725 650 7 Bombings.|2fast|0https://id.worldcat.org/fast/835818 650 7 Terrorism|xReligious aspects|xChristianity.|2fast|0https:/ /id.worldcat.org/fast/1148137 650 7 Violence|xReligious aspects|xChristianity.|2fast|0https:// id.worldcat.org/fast/1167252 651 7 United States.|2fast|0https://id.worldcat.org/fast/1204155 651 7 Florida|zPensacola.|2fast|0https://id.worldcat.org/fast/ 1206144 655 4 Electronic books. 655 7 Case studies.|2fast|0https://id.worldcat.org/fast/1423765 655 7 Case studies.|2lcgft|0https://id.loc.gov/authorities/ genreForms/gf2017026140 700 1 Prewitt, Terry J.|q(Terry James),|d1945-|0https:// id.loc.gov/authorities/names/n88010086 776 08 |iPrint version:|aBlanchard, Dallas A.|tReligious violence and abortion.|dGainesville : University Press of Florida, ©1993|z0813011930|w(DLC) 92039693|w(OCoLC)27067483 856 40 |uhttps://rider.idm.oclc.org/login?url=http:// search.ebscohost.com/login.aspx?direct=true&scope=site& db=nlebk&AN=39983|zOnline eBook.
