Rory Rapple examines the experiences and attitudes of this generation of officers and points to a previously overlooked literature of complaint that offered a stinging critique of the monarch and the administration of Sir William Cecil. He also argues that the captains' actions in Ireland, their treatment of its inhabitants and their conceptualisation of both relied on assumptions, attitudes and political thinking which resulted more from their frustration with the status quo in England than from any tendency to 'other' the Irish. This book will be required reading for scholars of early modern British and Irish history."--Jacket. 588 0 Print version record. 590 eBooks on EBSCOhost|bEBSCO eBook Subscription Academic Collection - North America 600 00 Elizabeth|bI,|cQueen of England,|d1533-1603|0https:// id.loc.gov/authorities/names/n79081709|xMilitary leadership.|0https://id.loc.gov/authorities/subjects/ sh00005827 600 07 Elizabeth|bI,|cQueen of England,|d1533-1603.|2fast|0https: //id.worldcat.org/fast/39609 648 7 1485-1603|2fast 650 7 Command of troops.|2fast|0https://id.worldcat.org/fast/ 869220 650 7 History, Military.|2fast|0https://id.worldcat.org/fast/ 1353231 650 7 Military policy.|2fast|0https://id.worldcat.org/fast/ 1021386 650 7 International relations.|2fast|0https://id.worldcat.org/ fast/977053 651 0 Great Britain|xHistory, Military|y1485-1603.|0https:// id.loc.gov/authorities/subjects/sh85056837 651 0 Great Britain|xMilitary policy.|0https://id.loc.gov/ authorities/subjects/sh2007100235 651 0 Great Britain|xHistory|yElizabeth, 1558-1603.|0https:// id.loc.gov/authorities/subjects/sh85056783 651 0 Great Britain|xForeign relations|zIreland.|0https:// id.loc.gov/authorities/subjects/sh2007100243 651 0 Ireland|xForeign relations|zGreat Britain.|0https:// id.loc.gov/authorities/subjects/sh2008115500 651 7 Great Britain.|2fast|0https://id.worldcat.org/fast/1204623 651 7 Ireland.|2fast|0https://id.worldcat.org/fast/1205427 655 4 Electronic books. 655 7 History.|2fast|0https://id.worldcat.org/fast/1411628 655 7 Military history.|2fast|0https://id.worldcat.org/fast/ 1411630 776 08 |iPrint version:|aRapple, Rory.|tMartial power and Elizabethan political culture.|dCambridge ; New York : Cambridge University Press, 2009|w(DLC) 2008039993 830 0 Cambridge studies in early modern British history.|0https: //id.loc.gov/authorities/names/n86721011 856 40 |uhttps://rider.idm.oclc.org/login?url=http:// search.ebscohost.com/login.aspx?direct=true&scope=site& db=nlebk&AN=263487|zOnline eBook via EBSCO.
