Mozart's masterpiece in a new production by Jean-Yves Ruf for the Dijon Opera! Should we introduce the opera of all operas, this ultimate mythical opera? It is the story of a seducer, during the last day before he falls to Hell, always trying to play with love and pleasures. This myth inspired numerous writers and composers, including Hoffmann, Kierkegaard, Wagner and yet always remains inspiring. With his wonderful and moving score, Mozart mixes humour with drama in this opera that always fascinated people. And this work has not yet unveiled all its secrets. Premiered in Prague in 1787, Don Giovanni was staged in Vienna the next year and as tradition required, Mozart changed some roles, according to the new singers performing. For instance he removed Don Ottavio's first song to replace it by a new one during the Act I. In the Act II, he replaced Leporello's song with a duet with Zerlina. He also gave Donna Elvira another song and removed the last scene in order to end the opera when the hero falls to Hell. Since that, it has been customary to mix both versions. Here in Dijon, the stage director Jean-Yves Ruf (who staged Agrippina in 2011) and the music director Gérard Korsten chose to present the original version presented in Prague. It is also the occasion to discover again the Chamber Orchestra of Europe performing Mozart, after their unforgettable performances conducted by Solti and Abbado over ten years ago. |
