Summary |
Traces the 75-year struggle to add the ERA to the U.S. Constitution. After Amendment 19 gave women the right to vote in 1920, suffragist leader Alice Paul wrote the ERA in 1923 as the next step toward women's equality. Congress passed the ERA in 1972 and it was ratified by 35 of the necessary 38 states, but political opposition stopped ratification before the 1982 deadline. Portrays the ERA as a legacy from the equality fighters of the past: Elizabeth Cady Stanton, Lucretia Mott, Frederick Douglass, Susan B. Anthony, Sojourner Truth, Alice Paul and her National Woman's Party colleagues, and others. |
