It has been 72 years since the United States last created a new military service, the Air Force. The other military services date back to the first years of the American nation. Because the Department of Defense does not often create military services, this is an opportune time to consider the implications of creating an independent Space Force. RAND developed an analytic approach to determine which units to bring into the Space Force. The authors asked how a transfer might affect any of the following four organizational attributes: effectiveness, efficiency, independence, and sense of identity. Then, the authors assessed a set of career fields to consider whether they would be sustainable in the Space Force. These analyses are complemented with an examination of other organizations that the Department of Defense has created to gain insights into potential challenges that the Space Force might face as it stands up and grows into its role. 588 0 Online resource; title from PDF cover page (RAND, viewed March 21, 2020). 590 eBooks on EBSCOhost|bEBSCO eBook Subscription Academic Collection - North America 610 10 United States.|bDepartment of Defense|0https://id.loc.gov/ authorities/names/n79021946|xOrganization|0https:// id.loc.gov/authorities/subjects/sh00006418|xPlanning. |0https://id.loc.gov/authorities/subjects/sh2002006228 610 17 United States.|bDepartment of Defense.|2fast|0https:// id.worldcat.org/fast/1852447 650 0 Military planning|zUnited States.|0https://id.loc.gov/ authorities/subjects/sh2008107332 650 0 Space control (Military science)|0https://id.loc.gov/ authorities/subjects/sh2006000702|zUnited States.|0https:/ /id.loc.gov/authorities/names/n78095330-781 650 0 Astronautics, Military|zUnited States|0https://id.loc.gov/ authorities/subjects/sh2008117628|xPlanning.|0https:// id.loc.gov/authorities/subjects/sh2002006228 650 7 Organization.|2fast|0https://id.worldcat.org/fast/1047777 650 7 Planning.|2fast|0https://id.worldcat.org/fast/1065224 650 7 Military planning.|2fast|0https://id.worldcat.org/fast/ 1021370 650 7 Space control (Military science)|2fast|0https:// id.worldcat.org/fast/1739560 650 7 Astronautics, Military.|2fast|0https://id.worldcat.org/ fast/819604 651 7 United States.|2fast|0https://id.worldcat.org/fast/1204155 655 4 Electronic books. 700 1 Kim, Yool,|0https://id.loc.gov/authorities/names/ n2005074662|eauthor. 700 1 Camm, Frank,|eauthor. 700 1 Ross, Shirley M.,|0https://id.loc.gov/authorities/names/ no2020081456|eauthor. 700 1 Knopman, Debra,|eauthor. 700 1 Morgan, Forrest E.,|0https://id.loc.gov/authorities/names/ n92048074|eauthor. 700 1 Bae, Sebastian J.,|0https://id.loc.gov/authorities/names/ no2021029141|eauthor. 700 1 Bond, M.
