Summary The great and charismatic maestro Claudio Abbado and the young pianist Yuja Wang open for the 2009 Lucerne Festival. The amazing rendition of Prokofiev's Piano Concerto No. 3 by Yuja Wang, aged just 22, was highly praised by the audience. This work, composed in 1921 by the Russian composer, was initially not much appreciated. It is only two years after its premiere that it was acclaimed by the audience and recorded by the London Symphony Orchestra under Piero Coppola's baton. Abbado and the Lucerne Festival Orchestra then followed their Mahler performance with the composer's Symphony No. 1, composed in 1888. This work, very poorly received by the critics during its first performances, was modified several times until 1906. Mahler associated several genres such as a fanfare, a funeral march and a waltz.
