Note "The Caribbean suite is an arrangement of pieces from Caribbean melodies by William Grant Still. The melodies were originally collected and annotated by Zora Neale Hurston and were set by Still in 1941. The instrumentation of the original score includes vocal soloists and a chorus of mixed voices, with an accompaniment of piano and percussion instruments. There are seventeen songs in Still's 1941 arrangement, eleven of which are set in the Caribbean suite. The new orchestration ... includes three steel pan parts ... and additional percussion and omits the mixed chorus. The pans occasionally replace the chorus but are most often used to enrich the harmony and texture and to enhance the natural quality and indigenous sound of the melodies."--Notes, p. [4].
