One year later a pirate edition was printed in The Hague, followed by many others. Galland entertained a lively correspondence on the subject with the Dutch intellectual and statesman Gisbert Cuper (1644- 1716). Dutch orientalists privately owned editions of the 'Nights' and discreetly collected manuscripts of Arabic fairytales. In 1719 the 'Nights' were first retranslated into Dutch by the wealthy Amsterdam silk merchant and financier Gilbert de Flines (Amsterdam 1690 - London 1739). This book explores not only the trail of the French and Dutch editions from the eighteenth-century Dutch Republic and the role of the printers and illustrators, but also the mixed sentiments of embarrassment and appreciation, and the overall literary impact of the 'Nights' on a Protestant nation in a century when French cultural influence ruled supreme. 588 Online resource; title from PDF title page (EBSCO, viewed April 22, 2019). 590 eBooks on EBSCOhost|bEBSCO eBook Subscription Academic Collection - North America 630 00 Arabian nights|0https://id.loc.gov/authorities/names/ n80008548|xTranslations.|0https://id.loc.gov/authorities/ subjects/sh99002028 630 7 Arabian nights.|2fast|0https://id.worldcat.org/fast/ 1356541 630 07 Arabian nights.|2fast|0https://id.worldcat.org/fast/ 1356541 648 7 18th century|2fast 648 7 1700-1799|2fast 650 0 Orientalism|0https://id.loc.gov/authorities/subjects/ sh99010610|zNetherlands|0https://id.loc.gov/authorities/ names/n78085423-781|xHistory|y18th century.|0https:// id.loc.gov/authorities/subjects/sh2002006124 650 7 Translations.|2fast|0https://id.worldcat.org/fast/1154827 650 7 Orientalism.|2fast|0https://id.worldcat.org/fast/1048139 650 7 History.|2fast|0https://id.worldcat.org/fast/958235 651 7 Netherlands.|2fast|0https://id.worldcat.org/fast/1204034 655 4 Electronic books. 655 7 History.|2fast|0https://id.worldcat.org/fast/1411628 655 7 Translations.|2fast|0https://id.worldcat.org/fast/1423791 700 1 Vrolijk, Arnoud,|0https://id.loc.gov/authorities/names/ no99077692|eauthor. 856 40 |uhttps://rider.idm.oclc.org/login?url=http:// search.ebscohost.com/login.aspx?direct=true&scope=site& db=nlebk&AN=2103524|zOnline ebook via EBSCO.
