Drastic spending reductions and ongoing restraint in social assistance, income supports, and the provision of affordable housing, combined with the offloading of social responsibilities onto municipalities, has contributed to the generalization of social issues once chiefly associated with Canada's largest urban centres. As the investigations in this volume illustrate, while some communities responded to these issues with inclusionary and progressive actions others were more exclusionary and reactive--revealing forms of discrimination, exclusion, and "othering" in the implementation of practices and policies. Importantly, however their investigations reveal a broad range of responses to the social issues they face. No matter the process and results of the proposed solutions, what the contributors uncovered were distinctive attributes of the small city as it struggles to confront increasingly complex social issues. If local governments accept a social agenda as part of its responsibilities, the contributors to Small Cities, Big Issues believe that small cities can succeed in reconceiving community based on the ideals of acceptance, accommodation, and inclusion."--|cProvided by publisher. 530 Issued also in printed form. 588 0 Online resource; title from PDF title page (EBSCO, viewed September 10, 2018). 590 eBooks on EBSCOhost|bEBSCO eBook Subscription Academic Collection - North America 650 0 Small cities|0https://id.loc.gov/authorities/subjects/ sh2007006229|zCanada|0https://id.loc.gov/authorities/names /n79007233-781|vCase studies.|0https://id.loc.gov/ authorities/subjects/sh99001484 650 0 Sociology, Urban|0https://id.loc.gov/authorities/subjects/ sh85124233|zCanada|0https://id.loc.gov/authorities/names/ n79007233-781|vCase studies.|0https://id.loc.gov/ authorities/subjects/sh99001484 650 7 Small cities.|2fast|0https://id.worldcat.org/fast/1743749 650 7 Sociology, Urban.|2fast|0https://id.worldcat.org/fast/ 1123961 650 7 Social conditions.|2fast|0https://id.worldcat.org/fast/ 1919811 651 0 Canada|xSocial conditions|0https://id.loc.gov/authorities/ subjects/sh85019352|vCase studies.|0https://id.loc.gov/ authorities/subjects/sh99001484 651 7 Canada.|2fast|0https://id.worldcat.org/fast/1204310 655 0 Electronic books. 655 4 Electronic books. 655 7 Case studies.|2fast|0https://id.worldcat.org/fast/1423765 655 7 Case studies.|2lcgft|0https://id.loc.gov/authorities/ genreForms/gf2017026140 700 1 Kading, Terry,|d1962-|0https://id.loc.gov/authorities/ names/nb2019002527|eauthor,|eeditor. 700 1 Walmsley, Christopher,|d1949-|0https://id.loc.gov/ authorities/names/n93110765|eauthor,|eeditor. 776 1 |tSmall cities, big issues.:|dEdmonton, Alberta : AU Press, 2018|w(CaOONL)20169072215 776 08 |iPrint version:|tSmall cities, big issues.|dEdmonton, Alberta : AU Press, 2018|z9781771991636|z1771991631 |w(OCoLC)1035218288 830 0 desLibris.|pBooks collection. 856 40 |uhttps://rider.idm.oclc.org/login?url=http:// search.ebscohost.com/login.aspx?direct=true&scope=site& db=nlebk&AN=1857030|zOnline eBook via EBSCO.
