And yet there has been no comprehensive objective history of Greenpeace's origins-until now. Make It a Green Peace! draws upon meeting minutes, internal correspondence, manifestos, philosophical writings, and interviews with former members to offer the first full account of the origins of what has become the most recognizable environmental non-governmental organization in the world. Situating Greenpeace within the peace movement and counterculture of the 1960s, Frank Zelko provides a much deeper treatment of the group's groundbreaking brand of radical, media-savvy, direct- action environmentalism than has been previously attempted. Zelko traces the complex intellectual and cultural roots of Greenpeace to the various protest movements of the 1950s and 1960s, highlighting the influence of Quakerism--with its practice of bearing witness--Native American spirituality, and the non-violent resistance of Gandhi. Unlike the more strait-laced, less confrontational Sierra Club and Audubon Society, early Greenpeacers smoked dope, dropped acid, wore their hair long, and put their bodies on the line--interposing themselves between the harpoons of whalers and the clubs of seal-hunters--to save the animals and achieve what they hoped would be a lasting transformation in the way humans regarded the natural world. And while it may not have achieved its most revolutionary goals, Greenpeace inarguably created a heightened awareness of environmental issues that endures to this day."--Provided by publisher. 588 0 Online resource; title from e-book title screen (EBL platform, viewed March 30, 2016). 590 eBooks on EBSCOhost|bEBSCO eBook Subscription Academic Collection - North America 610 20 Greenpeace International|0https://id.loc.gov/authorities/ names/n85273073|xHistory.|0https://id.loc.gov/authorities/ subjects/sh99005024 610 24 Greenpeace International. 610 27 Greenpeace International.|2fast|0https://id.worldcat.org/ fast/625367 610 27 Greenpeace International.|2gnd 650 0 Environmental protection|0https://id.loc.gov/authorities/ subjects/sh85044203|xPolitical aspects.|0https:// id.loc.gov/authorities/subjects/sh00005651 650 0 Antinuclear movement|0https://id.loc.gov/authorities/ subjects/sh85005721|xHistory.|0https://id.loc.gov/ authorities/subjects/sh99005024 650 0 Environmentalism|xHistory.|0https://id.loc.gov/authorities /subjects/sh2009103463 650 0 Counterculture|0https://id.loc.gov/authorities/subjects/ sh00002005|xHistory.|0https://id.loc.gov/authorities/ subjects/sh99005024 650 7 History.|2fast|0https://id.worldcat.org/fast/958235 650 7 Environmental protection|xPolitical aspects.|2fast|0https: //id.worldcat.org/fast/913382 650 7 Environmental protection.|2fast|0https://id.worldcat.org/ fast/913324 650 7 Antinuclear movement.|2fast|0https://id.worldcat.org/fast/ 810626 650 7 Environmentalism.|2fast|0https://id.worldcat.org/fast/ 913543 650 7 Counterculture.|2fast|0https://id.worldcat.org/fast/881315 655 4 Electronic books. 655 7 History.|2fast|0https://id.worldcat.org/fast/1411628 776 08 |iPrint version:|aZelko, Frank S.|tMake it a green peace! |dNew York : Oxford University Press, ©2013|z9780199947089 |w(DLC) 2012042260|w(OCoLC)811599693 856 40 |uhttps://rider.idm.oclc.org/login?url=http:// search.ebscohost.com/login.aspx?direct=true&scope=site& db=nlebk&AN=563861|zOnline eBook.
