Summary The solar updraft tower (also: Solar Chimney) power technology (SUTPT) is simple, robust, sustainable, and a long lasting technology, producing electric power from solar radiation with low maintenance cost and no cooling water. A SUTPT plant will provide electric power over many decades. The feasibility of the SUTPT has been demonstrated successfully by the famous Manzanares Prototype and more recently by a number of project studies. The main goal of the special collection was to gather the current knowledge in thermodynamics, fluid-mechanics, structural engineering, as well as comparison of hybrid or alternative energy concepts. The associated discussions will facilitate exchanges of new ideas and provide a guide for future research directions in the SUTPT area. The 12 papers selected for the October 2012 conference present advances inmodeling the thermodynamics, fluid mechanics, and structural engineering ofsolar updraft towers for producing electric power from solar radiation withminimal maintenance and no cooling water. Two case studies from Chinadescribe a high-rise building design incorporating a solar updraft tower andthe optimal arrangement of solar panels and a battery array for powering aparking garage. Plans for an atmospheric vortex engine propose a process forcapturing the mechanical energy produced during upward heat convection.
