Summary |
"In the early 1920s, the blues landscape was dominated by women who sang with pianists or jazz bands. Of these so-called classic blues singers, whose art was rooted in both vaudeville and the Southern blues tradition, none was greater, or had a larger influence, than Bessie Smith. Smith embodied all the virtues of the classic blues style, and then transcended its limits. Her voice was huge, her intonation perfect, her expressiveness breathtaking. This disc, spanning her brief but remarkably productive recording career, contains some of Smith's greatest performances."--Container. |
