Summary Program #481 : Title: A visit to Donets "The break-up of the former Soviet Union cast its constituent states into a realm of uncertainty. Old societies with venerable histories became new nations overnight, blending their native culture with a new global economic imperative and the dictates of democracy. Ukraine has faced this challenge with energy, courage, and a commitment to gaining a respected place in the congress of democratic states. For all that, the transition is imperfect. Internal economic policies proceed unevenly, but its foreign policy is quite successful. The real story of this vast change is written in individual lives. Former Ambassador William Miller describes what is at stake and what problems lie ahead."--Track sheet.
Program #482 : Title: A freudian century "There were two revolutions that rocked the 19th century and disrupted the stable order of centuries of predictable social order. The late 18th century French Revolution and the Industrial Revolution of the 1830's caused enormous upheaval and displacement. An order was overturned and in its wake chaos flowed. Societies in Europe were marked by the new mass disease of hysteria. Into this maelstrom entered the new science of psychoanalysis and the striking personal contribution of Sigmund Freud. Freudian theory would address the place of the individual in a newly reconstituted social order. Martin Wain explains how."--Track sheet.
