Summary Program #491 : Title: Anglomania "Voltaire was an anglophile. The French philosopher held English culture in high regard for its freedom of thought and celebration of the individual thinker. Goethe also had a high regard for England's literature and his countrymen relished the work of Shakespeare. Just as significantly, other European political and intellectual leaders had disdain for England. In either case, attitudes toward England have been part of a personal and national search for identity for many centuries. Ian Buruma explains this in his new book 'Anglomania'"--Track sheet.
Program #492 : Title: When radio was king "When Radio hit its height of popularity in the 1930's, radio drama - particularly mysteries - was a big reason. The appeal of this 'theater of the mind' continued strong through the 1940's and early 1950's. Early radio pioneers like Norman Corwin, Arch Oboler and Orson Welles translated the traditions of the theater into this new technical format. In turn, their work influenced the Film Noir movement of the late 1940's in Hollywood. Ken Mueller describes an era and its leading figures."--Track sheet.
