Summary Program #497 : Title: Leaving Vietnam "The word heard so often when Vietnam is discussed is “betrayal.” The North Vietnamese sense of betrayal after deposing the French is held to be one cause of the later, broader conflict. The South Vietnamese felt betrayal in the sense of unfilled American promises to remain after the truce. American soldiers have long expressed a view that they were undercut by the political management of the war. Larry Berman, who is writing a book about the end of the war, discusses the messy end of a still controversial conflict."--Track sheet.
Program #498 : Title: Exporting democracy "When the world changed in 1989, America was “deprived of an enemy” as Soviet spokesman Georgy Arbatov expressed it. But that didn’t make the prospects for stable, worldwide peace any brighter. What may improve the likelihood of peaceful relations globally is the extent to which nations adopt and perfect democratic practice. America has a national interest in the spread of democracy. It is rooted in its historic values and experience. John Ikenberry explains why this is so."--Track sheet.
