Summary Program #529 : Title: Speaking Dolgan "The Taimyro region of Siberia is twice the size of California. A small number of ethnic groups inhabit the region and their indigenous languages are fast disappearing. Among these communities is the Dolgan people of whom there are but 8000 members, and only half of them speak the native tongue. John Ziker is a cultural anthropologist devoted to the preservation of the Dolgan language and culture. He explains what is at stake." Track sheet.
Program #530 : Title: Children of the transition "A decade after the fall of state socialism, the economic transformation of Central Asian republics is still deeply troubled. Safetynets in the form of official guarantees of education and health care have been lost. Most vulnerable are women and children. Children lack decent nutrition and are increasingly unschooled. Women grapple with new models of economic social success. The result of so much deprivation is an insecure society rife with alienation and despair. Cultural anthropologist Kathleen Kuehnast explains the larger implications of these circumstances."--Track sheet.
