Summary Program #552 : Title: The state of the city "Given that the problems of major cities range from administration to crime to drug addiction, Houston's Mayor Lee P. Brown is well qualified to lead his city. He was formerly New York's Police Chief and America's drug czar. Here he gives greatest emphasis to education and literacy as the keys to urban progress in a global era. He also explains the concept of community-oriented policing and its role in reducing neighborhood crime."--Track sheet.
Program #553 : Title: The census and its discontents "Since 1790 the decennial exercise of the Census has provided a portrait of American society at ten-year intervals. the process may always have been challenged but controversy is intense now over the under representation of specific ethnic groups in the count. Author Peter Skerry concedes the fact of under representation but contends that artificial "statistical adjustment" will do more harm than good. Most important, he feels, is a renewed emphasis on the political process and voting registration to redress grievances."--Track sheet.
