Summary Program #616 : Title: The idea of India "It is popular in the West to think that the British influence led directly to Indian democracy. In fact, the vibrant democracy India has sustained for 50 years is really a product of the Indian political intelligentsia. Sunil Khilnani describes how Nehru and others invented their country at the time of independence."--Track sheet.
Program #314 : Title: Landmines : death underfoot "The traffic in conventional arms continues to engulf the world with unremitting tenacity. Particularly affected the third world nations where ancient hostilities are exacerbated by the ready available supply of cheap and deadly weapons. And in these arsenals no weapon is cheaper, deadlier or more prolific than the simple and ubiquitous landmine. A country like Cambodia may have eight million landmines to match its eight million citizens; and 26,000 victims are maimed and killed each year. Voices in the U.S. Congress are now joining others in proposing methods to end a slaughter that might otherwise extend for decades. Caleb Rossiter explains a strategy for the elimination of landmines worldwide.
