Summary Program #177 : Title: On ethnicity "As scholar, Kingsley DeSilva of Sri Lanka states at the outset of this conversation, ethnicity has become the most ubiquitous and problematic subject in the world today. For all the attention it gets ethnicity is still a murky subject rooted in a people's ideal vision of themselves and their histories. What it lacks in scientific precision is compensated by the romantic, almost tribal appeal of its expression. De Silva analyzes problems of ethnicity in several societies and concludes with encouraging observations about American society."
Program #282 : Title: The fountain of age "Despite demographic projections clearly depicting an aging population, America retains its obsession with youth and the culture of the young. This fascination tends to strongly suggest that advancing age is tantamount to obsolescence. And as the elderly are marginalized, talents and contributions that might have sprung from their maturity are lost to them and their society. Betty Friedan, author of The Fountain of Age, argues against the wastage in individual lives and communities nationwide caused by a counterproductive emphasis on staying forever young."
