Summary Program #315: Title: Achilles in Vietnam. Part 1 "The Iliad of Homer occupies a very special place as a literary classic consecrated by centuries of devoted readership. It is also a first-rate war story replete with accurate psychological insight into the emotions of warriors under the stress of battle. Psychiatrist and author Jonathan Shay relates the text of The Iliad and the experiences of Achilles to the trauma of the veterans he works with, whose recurrent memories of Vietnam are haunting intrusions into their attempts at normal civilian life".
Program #316: Title: Achilles in Vietnam. Part 2 "In this concluding portion of "Achilles in Vietnam," author Jonathan Shay describes the precise clinical qualities of Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder as it affects former soldiers and civilians who have suffered traumatic loss. He reflects on possible parallels with the behavior of young people caught up in the stress of violent neighborhoods. And he uses his own experience to suggest ways in which relatives, friends, and associates of stress disorder patients can help in their treatment and their return to the community".
