520 Using the Roman province of Macedonia as an example, this
work presents a critical analysis of the generally held
opinion among social historians that the society of the
Roman Empire was based on a class system. An analysis of
the sources, mostly inscriptions, reveals that? in
contrast to the situation elsewhere in the Empire? here
there is no evidence for a class-based elite, and that
more attention must be paid to regional variations in the
structure of society than has been the case.
