It analyses Sarpi's natural philosophy, religious ideas and political thought. Kainulainen argues that Sarpi was influenced by Neostoicism, Neoepicureanism and the sixteenth-century scientific revolution; that Sarpi was a fideist and Christian mortalist who, while critical of the contemporary Church of Rome, admired the purity of the early church. Focusing on Sarpi's separation between church and state, his use of absolutism, divine right of kings and reason of state, the book offers a fresh perspective on medieval and reformation traditions. It will be of interest to those interested in early-modern intellectual history and the interplay between science, religion and politics in sixteenth- and seventeenth- century political discourse. 588 0 Print version record. 590 eBooks on EBSCOhost|bEBSCO eBook Subscription Academic Collection - North America 600 10 Sarpi, Paolo,|d1552-1623.|0https://id.loc.gov/authorities/ names/n79124620 600 17 Sarpi, Paolo,|d1552-1623.|2fast|0https://id.worldcat.org/ fast/44845 610 20 Servites|0https://id.loc.gov/authorities/names/n79065471 |zItaly|zVenice|0https://id.loc.gov/authorities/names/ n79018142-781|vBiography.|0https://id.loc.gov/authorities/ subjects/sh99001237 610 27 Servites.|2fast|0https://id.worldcat.org/fast/533803 648 7 1508-1797|2fast 650 0 Historians|0https://id.loc.gov/authorities/subjects/ sh85061091|zItaly|zVenice|0https://id.loc.gov/authorities/ names/n79018142-781|vBiography.|0https://id.loc.gov/ authorities/subjects/sh99001237 650 0 Statesmen|0https://id.loc.gov/authorities/subjects/ sh85127538|zItaly|zVenice|0https://id.loc.gov/authorities/ names/n79018142-781|vBiography.|0https://id.loc.gov/ authorities/subjects/sh99001237 650 0 Renaissance|zItaly|zVenice.|0https://id.loc.gov/ authorities/subjects/sh2010110737 650 7 Historians.|2fast|0https://id.worldcat.org/fast/957686 650 7 Statesmen.|2fast|0https://id.worldcat.org/fast/1131990 650 7 Renaissance.|2fast|0https://id.worldcat.org/fast/1094518 651 0 Venice (Italy)|0https://id.loc.gov/authorities/names/ n79018142|xIntellectual life.|0https://id.loc.gov/ authorities/subjects/sh99005642 651 0 Venice (Italy)|0https://id.loc.gov/authorities/names/ n79018142|vBiography.|0https://id.loc.gov/authorities/ subjects/sh99001237 651 0 Venice (Italy)|xHistory|y1508-1797.|0https://id.loc.gov/ authorities/subjects/sh85142724 651 7 Italy|zVenice.|2fast|0https://id.worldcat.org/fast/1204473 655 0 Electronic books. 655 4 Electronic books. 655 7 Biographies.|2fast|0https://id.worldcat.org/fast/1919896 655 7 Biographies.|2lcgft|0https://id.loc.gov/authorities/ genreForms/gf2014026049 776 08 |iPrint version:|aKainulainen, Jaska.|tPaolo Sarpi |z9789004261143|w(DLC) 2013046963|w(OCoLC)864429475 830 0 Studies in medieval and Reformation traditions ;|0https:// id.loc.gov/authorities/names/n2004013828|v180. 856 40 |uhttps://rider.idm.oclc.org/login?url=http:// search.ebscohost.com/login.aspx?direct=true&scope=site& db=nlebk&AN=716923|zOnline eBook.
