Horowitz relays the paradoxes of a synthetic Jewish and Russian self- consciousness in order to correct critics who have always considered Russians and Jews to be polar opposites and even enemies. In fact, the best Russian Jewish intellectuals--Semyon Dubnov, Maxim Vinaver, Mikhail Gershenzon, and a number of Zionist writers and thinkers-- were actually inspired by Russian culture and attempted to develop a sui generis Jewish creativity in three languages on Russian soil. 542 1 |fThis work is licensed by Knowledge Unlatched under a Creative Commons license|uhttps://creativecommons.org/ licenses/by-nc/4.0/legalcode 546 English. 588 0 Online resource; title from digital title page (viewed on Oct. 23, 2013). 590 eBooks on EBSCOhost|bEBSCO eBook Subscription Academic Collection - North America 590 JSTOR|bBooks at JSTOR Open Access 648 7 19th century|2fast 648 7 1801-1917|2fast 648 7 1800-1917|2fast 650 0 Jews|zRussia|0https://id.loc.gov/authorities/subjects/ sh92004055|xIntellectual life|y19th century.|0https:// id.loc.gov/authorities/subjects/sh00006345 650 7 Jews.|2fast|0https://id.worldcat.org/fast/983135 650 7 Intellectual life.|2fast|0https://id.worldcat.org/fast/ 975769 651 0 Russia|xIntellectual life|y1801-1917.|0https://id.loc.gov/ authorities/subjects/sh85125825 651 7 Russia.|2fast|0https://id.worldcat.org/fast/1207312 653 History 655 0 Electronic books. 655 4 Electronic books. 776 08 |iPrint version:|z9781936235612|z1936235617 856 40 |uhttps://www.jstor.org/stable/10.2307/j.ctt1zxsjzk |zOnline ebook.
