The book focuses on how the Mahdi and his second-in-command and ultimate successor, the Khalifa Abdallahi, used symbols, ceremony and ritual to articulate their power, authority and legitimacy first within the context of resistance to the imperial Turco-Egyptian forces that had been occupying the Nilotic Sudan since 1821, and then within the context of establishing an Islamic state. This study examines five key elements from a historical perspective: the importance of Islamic mysticism as manifested in Sufi brotherhoods in the articulation of power in the Sudan; ceremony as handmaids of power and legitimacy; charismatic leadership; the routinization of charisma and the formation of a religious state purportedly based upon the first Islamic community in the seventh century C.E. 504 Includes bibliographical references (pages 153-155) and index. 588 0 Print version record. 590 eBooks on EBSCOhost|bEBSCO eBook Subscription Academic Collection - North America 648 7 1881-1899|2fast 650 0 Islamic renewal|0https://id.loc.gov/authorities/subjects/ sh94006895|zSudan.|0https://id.loc.gov/authorities/names/ n79022301-781 650 0 Islam and politics|zSudan.|0https://id.loc.gov/authorities /subjects/sh2008104949 650 7 History.|2fast|0https://id.worldcat.org/fast/958235 650 7 Islamic renewal.|2fast|0https://id.worldcat.org/fast/ 980053 650 7 Islam and politics.|2fast|0https://id.worldcat.org/fast/ 979879 651 0 Sudan|xHistory|y1881-1899.|0https://id.loc.gov/authorities /subjects/sh85129607 651 7 Sudan.|2fast|0https://id.worldcat.org/fast/1204591 655 4 Electronic books. 655 7 History.|2fast|0https://id.worldcat.org/fast/1411628 776 08 |iPrint version:|aSearcy, Kim.|tFormation of the Sudanese Mahdist state.|dBoston, Mass. ; Leiden : Brill, 2011 |z9789004185999|w(DLC) 2010041727|w(OCoLC)668403809 830 0 Islam in Africa ;|0https://id.loc.gov/authorities/names/ n2002054444|vv. 11. 856 40 |uhttps://rider.idm.oclc.org/login?url=http:// search.ebscohost.com/login.aspx?direct=true&scope=site& db=nlebk&AN=368028|zOnline eBook.
