Summary The fantastical opera tells of the aged Tsar Dodon, who receives a golden cockerel from an astrologer to warn of any danger to his tsardom. He later falls blindly in love with the cunning queen of Shemakha, who, with the wily astrologer, turns the tsar's world upside down.
