She and her husband were the first federally licensed peyote dealers. They began harvesting and selling the sacramental plant to followers of the Native American Church (NAC) in the 1930s, and after her husband's death in the late 1960s Mrs. Cardenas continued to befriend and help generations of NAC members until her death in 2005, just short of her 101st birthday. Author Stacy B. Schaefer, a close friend of Amada, spent thirteen years doing fieldwork with this remarkable woman. Her book weaves together the geography, biology, history, cultures, and religions that created the unique life of Mrs. Cardenas and the people she knew. Schaefer includes their words to help tell the story of how Mexican Americans, Tejanos, gringos, Native Americans, and others were touched and inspired by Amada Cardenas's embodiment of the core NAC values: faith, hope, love, and charity"--|cProvided by publisher. 588 0 Print version record. 590 eBooks on EBSCOhost|bEBSCO eBook Subscription Academic Collection - North America 600 10 Cardenas, Amada.|0https://id.loc.gov/authorities/names/ n2015038500 600 11 Cardenas, Amada. 600 17 Cardenas, Amada.|2fast|0https://id.worldcat.org/fast/ 1988546 610 20 Native American Church of North America.|0https:// id.loc.gov/authorities/names/n88105461 610 27 Native American Church of North America.|2fast|0https:// id.worldcat.org/fast/641287 650 0 Mexican American women|0https://id.loc.gov/authorities/ subjects/sh85084496|vBiography.|0https://id.loc.gov/ authorities/subjects/sh99001237 650 0 Mexican Americans|xSocial life and customs.|0https:// id.loc.gov/authorities/subjects/sh2010101609 650 0 Mexican Americans|xReligion.|0https://id.loc.gov/ authorities/subjects/sh86001870 650 0 Peyotism.|0https://id.loc.gov/authorities/subjects/ sh85100519 650 7 Mexican American women.|2fast|0https://id.worldcat.org/ fast/1019031 650 7 Mexican Americans|xSocial life and customs.|2fast|0https:/ /id.worldcat.org/fast/1019152 650 7 Mexican Americans|xReligion.|2fast|0https:// id.worldcat.org/fast/1019144 650 7 Peyotism.|2fast|0https://id.worldcat.org/fast/1059991 655 0 Electronic books. 655 4 Electronic books. 655 7 Biographies.|2fast|0https://id.worldcat.org/fast/1919896 655 7 Biographies.|2lcgft|0https://id.loc.gov/authorities/ genreForms/gf2014026049 776 08 |iPrint version:|aSchaefer, Stacy B., 1956-|tAmada's blessings from the peyote gardens of South Texas |z9780826356215|w(DLC) 2015004415|w(OCoLC)907885162 856 40 |uhttps://rider.idm.oclc.org/login?url=https:// search.ebscohost.com/login.aspx?direct=true&scope=site& db=nlebk&AN=982493|zOnline ebook via EBSCO.
