Crummell's Universality and Significance; Notes; Bibliography; Appendix: Constitution and By-Laws of the American Negro Academy; Index. 520 This remarkable biography, based on much new information, examines the life and times of one of the most prominent African-American intellectuals of the nineteenth century. Born in New York in 1819, Alexander Crummell was educated at Queen's College, Cambridge, after being denied admission to Yale University and the Episcopal Seminary on purely racial grounds. In 1853, steeped in the classical tradition and modern political theory, he went to the Republic of Liberia as an Episcopal missionary, but was forced to flee to Sierra Leone in 1872, having barely survived republican Africa's first coup. 588 0 Print version record. 590 eBooks on EBSCOhost|bEBSCO eBook Subscription Academic Collection - North America 600 10 Crummell, Alexander,|d1819-1898.|0https://id.loc.gov/ authorities/names/n50018541 600 17 Crummell, Alexander,|d1819-1898.|2fast|0https:// id.worldcat.org/fast/5908 648 7 19th century|2fast 648 7 1800 - 1899|2fast 650 0 Black nationalism|zUnited States|xHistory|0https:// id.loc.gov/authorities/subjects/sh2009117235|y19th century.|0https://id.loc.gov/authorities/subjects/ sh2002012475 650 0 Pan-Africanism|xHistory.|0https://id.loc.gov/authorities/ subjects/sh2010105002 650 0 African Americans|vBiography.|0https://id.loc.gov/ authorities/subjects/sh2007100197 650 7 Black nationalism.|2fast|0https://id.worldcat.org/fast/ 833733 650 7 History.|2fast|0https://id.worldcat.org/fast/958235 650 7 Pan-Africanism.|2fast|0https://id.worldcat.org/fast/ 1051896 650 7 African Americans|xBiography.|2fast|0https:// id.worldcat.org/fast/799570 651 7 United States.|2fast|0https://id.worldcat.org/fast/1204155 655 4 Electronic books. 655 7 Biographies.|2fast|0https://id.worldcat.org/fast/1919896 655 7 History.|2fast|0https://id.worldcat.org/fast/1411628 655 7 Biographies.|2lcgft|0https://id.loc.gov/authorities/ genreForms/gf2014026049 776 08 |iPrint version:|z9780195050967 856 40 |uhttps://rider.idm.oclc.org/login?url=http:// search.ebscohost.com/login.aspx?direct=true&scope=site& db=nlebk&AN=294799|zOnline eBook.
