How can the story of the Grimké sisters be of interest to contemporary French readers, who are not particularly au fait with 19th century American history? Will they seem them as activists in the radical antislavery movement or pioneers for the feminist cause? The sisters' story, including the destinations they selected or disowned, chronicles their journey, from a South mired in tradition to New England, the land of radical reform. It tells of the gestation of their own rebellion, of the hardening of their stance and of their social, religious and intellectual emancipation. More than the vocal contribution to the public debate against slavery, their writings, never before translated into French, shed light on this evolution which, together with the anti-slavery stance, places greater emphasis on feminist arguments, the progressivism of which remains unequalled even today. 588 0 Online resource; title from PDF title page (EBSCO, viewed November 29, 2017). 590 eBooks on EBSCOhost|bEBSCO eBook Subscription Academic Collection - North America 600 10 Grimké, Angelina Emily,|d1805-1879.|0https://id.loc.gov/ authorities/names/n50031655 600 10 Grimké, Sarah,|d1792-1873.|0https://id.loc.gov/authorities /names/n50031657 600 17 Grimké, Angelina Emily,|d1805-1879.|2fast|0https:// id.worldcat.org/fast/10567 600 17 Grimké, Sarah,|d1792-1873.|2fast|0https://id.worldcat.org/ fast/10569 648 7 19th century|2fast 648 7 1800-1899|2fast 650 0 Women abolitionists|0https://id.loc.gov/authorities/ subjects/sh91001563|zSouth Carolina|0https://id.loc.gov/ authorities/names/n79022914-781|vBiography.|0https:// id.loc.gov/authorities/subjects/sh99001237 650 0 Feminists|0https://id.loc.gov/authorities/subjects/ sh85047761|zSouth Carolina|0https://id.loc.gov/authorities /names/n79022914-781|vBiography.|0https://id.loc.gov/ authorities/subjects/sh99001237 650 0 Sisters|0https://id.loc.gov/authorities/subjects/ sh85123008|zSouth Carolina|0https://id.loc.gov/authorities /names/n79022914-781|vBiography.|0https://id.loc.gov/ authorities/subjects/sh99001237 650 0 Antislavery movements|zUnited States|xHistory|y19th century.|0https://id.loc.gov/authorities/subjects/ sh2007100463 650 0 Women's rights|zUnited States|xHistory|y19th century. |0https://id.loc.gov/authorities/subjects/sh2010119219 650 7 Women abolitionists.|2fast|0https://id.worldcat.org/fast/ 1177039 650 7 Feminists.|2fast|0https://id.worldcat.org/fast/922831 650 7 Sisters.|2fast|0https://id.worldcat.org/fast/1119758 650 7 Antislavery movements.|2fast|0https://id.worldcat.org/fast /810800 650 7 History.|2fast|0https://id.worldcat.org/fast/958235 650 7 Women's rights.|2fast|0https://id.worldcat.org/fast/ 1178818 650 7 Feminists.|2homoit|0https://homosaurus.org/v3/ homoit0000439 651 7 South Carolina.|2fast|0https://id.worldcat.org/fast/ 1204600 651 7 United States.|2fast|0https://id.worldcat.org/fast/1204155 655 4 Electronic books. 655 7 Biographies.|2fast|0https://id.worldcat.org/fast/1919896 655 7 History.|2fast|0https://id.worldcat.org/fast/1411628 655 7 Biographies.|2lcgft|0https://id.loc.gov/authorities/ genreForms/gf2014026049 700 1 Collomb-Boureau, Colette,|etranslator. 776 0 |z9782847888010 830 0 Fondamentaux du féminisme anglo-saxon.|0https://id.loc.gov /authorities/names/no2015000710 856 40 |uhttps://rider.idm.oclc.org/login?url=http:// search.ebscohost.com/login.aspx?direct=true&scope=site& db=nlebk&AN=1497061|zOnline ebook via EBSCO.
