Born to Presbyterian grain-growers in rural New Jersey, he was never quite satisfied with the agricultural life he seemed destined to inherit. Fithian longed for something more- to improve himself in a revolutionary world that was making upward mobility possible. Fithian is best known for the diary that he wrote in 1773-74 while working as a tutor at Nomini Hall, the Virginia plantation of Robert Carter, and his role as a Revolutionary War chaplain. From the villages of New Jersey, Fithian was able to participate indirectly in the eighteenth-century republic of letters- a transatlantic intellectual community. Participation required a commitment to self-improvement that demanded a belief in the Enlightenment values of human potential and social progress. He constantly struggled to reconcile this quest for a cosmopolitan life with his love of home. It was the people, the religious culture, and the very landscape of his "native sod" that continued to hold Fithian's affections. 600 10 Fithian, Philip Vickers,|d1747-1776.|0https://id.loc.gov/ authorities/names/no2002083764 600 17 Fithian, Philip Vickers,|d1747-1776.|2fast|0https:// id.worldcat.org/fast/483922 648 7 To 1775|2fast 648 7 18th century|2fast 650 0 Diarists|0https://id.loc.gov/authorities/subjects/ sh2003009038|zVirginia|0https://id.loc.gov/authorities/ names/n79022909-781|vBiography.|0https://id.loc.gov/ authorities/subjects/sh99001237 650 0 Tutors and tutoring|0https://id.loc.gov/authorities/ subjects/sh85138993|zVirginia|0https://id.loc.gov/ authorities/names/n79022909-781|vBiography.|0https:// id.loc.gov/authorities/subjects/sh99001237 650 0 Presbyterians|0https://id.loc.gov/authorities/subjects/ sh85106424|zNew Jersey|0https://id.loc.gov/authorities/ names/n80046086-781|vBiography.|0https://id.loc.gov/ authorities/subjects/sh99001237 650 0 Plantation life|0https://id.loc.gov/authorities/subjects/ sh85102824|zVirginia|0https://id.loc.gov/authorities/names /n79022909-781|xHistory|y18th century.|0https://id.loc.gov /authorities/subjects/sh2002006124 650 0 Enlightenment|zUnited States.|0https://id.loc.gov/ authorities/subjects/sh2008119712 650 0 American diaries|0https://id.loc.gov/authorities/subjects/ sh85004303|xHistory and criticism.|0https://id.loc.gov/ authorities/subjects/sh99001187 650 7 Diarists.|2fast|0https://id.worldcat.org/fast/892681 650 7 Tutors and tutoring.|2fast|0https://id.worldcat.org/fast/ 1159740 650 7 Presbyterians.|2fast|0https://id.worldcat.org/fast/1075567 650 7 Civil war|xReligious aspects|xPresbyterians.|2fast|0https: //id.worldcat.org/fast/2060449 650 7 Manners and customs.|2fast|0https://id.worldcat.org/fast/ 1007815 650 7 Plantation life.|2fast|0https://id.worldcat.org/fast/ 1065779 650 7 History.|2fast|0https://id.worldcat.org/fast/958235 650 7 Enlightenment.|2fast|0https://id.worldcat.org/fast/912527 650 7 American diaries.|2fast|0https://id.worldcat.org/fast/ 806992 650 7 Intellectual life.|2fast|0https://id.worldcat.org/fast/ 975769 651 0 Virginia|xSocial life and customs|yTo 1775.|0https:// id.loc.gov/authorities/subjects/sh85143781 651 0 United States|xHistory|yRevolution, 1775-1783|0https:// id.loc.gov/authorities/subjects/sh85140139|xChaplains. |0https://id.loc.gov/authorities/subjects/sh99004937 651 0 United States|xIntellectual life|y18th century.|0https:// id.loc.gov/authorities/subjects/sh85140364 651 7 Virginia.|2fast|0https://id.worldcat.org/fast/1204597 651 7 New Jersey.|2fast|0https://id.worldcat.org/fast/1208379 651 7 United States.|2fast|0https://id.worldcat.org/fast/1204155 655 7 Biographies.|2fast|0https://id.worldcat.org/fast/1919896 655 7 Biographies.|2lcgft|0https://id.loc.gov/authorities/ genreForms/gf2014026049 830 0 Early American studies.|0https://id.loc.gov/authorities/ names/n95098514 856 41 |3Table of contents only|uhttp://catdir.loc.gov/catdir/toc /ecip0812/2008006044.html 901 MARCIVE 20231220 935 563715 948 |d20120503|cMH|tconsult overlay 020 enrich|lridm|v1 994 C0|bRID
