Summary "Patagonia is the region of Latin America that encompasses the southernmost areas of Argentina and Chile, and has long been known as a landscape of marvels, including the mountains of the Chalten Massif, glaciers, beech forests, and lagunas. These breathtaking sites attract affluent travelers to "El Chalten." Recently, the Patagonian region has gone through key sociocultural and political-economic changes that provide insight into the post-neoliberal development regimes emerging in the Global South. The regional ecotourism industry has expanded enormously under the Kirchner administrations (Nestor Kirchner 2003-207 and Cristina Fernandez de Kirchner 2007-2015) in Argentina, attracting waves of entrepreneurs, seasonal laborers, and park rangers to provide services to growing numbers of tourists. These interests have been promoting sustainable development, land conservation, and ecotourism as the pillars of a new regional paradigm committed to the green economy. The book argues that the conservation state and entrepreneurial capital have forged alliances to develop national park tourism in ways that consolidate their hegemony and marginalize subaltern groups. This generates growing inequalities over access to resources"-- Provided by publisher.
"The Patagonian Sublime provides a vivid, accessible, and cutting-edge investigation of the green economy and New Left politics in Argentina. Based on extensive field research in Glaciers National Park and the mountain village of El Chalten, Marcos Mendoza deftly examines the diverse social worlds of alpine mountaineers, adventure trekkers, tourism entrepreneurs, seasonal laborers, park rangers, land managers, scientists, and others involved in the green economy. Mendoza explores the fraught intersection of the green economy with the New Left politics of the Nestor Kirchner and Cristina Fernandez de Kirchner governments. Mendoza documents the strategies of capitalist development, national representation, and political rule embedded in the "green productivist" agenda pursued by Kirchner and Fernandez. Mendoza shows how Andean Patagonian communities have responded to the challenges of community-based conservation, the fashioning of wilderness zones, and the drive to create place-based monopolies that allow ecotourism destinations to compete in the global consumer economy"-- Provided by publisher.
