"A greater monster," one colonial official wrote, "never infested the seas." Ashton barely survived the nine months he sailed with Low's crew -- he was nearly shot in the head at gunpoint, came close to drowning when a ship sank near the coast of Brazil, and was almost hanged for secretly plotting a revolt against the pirates. Like many forced men, Ashton thought constantly about escaping. In March of 1723, he saw his chance when Low's crew anchored at the secluded island of Roatan, at the western edge of the Caribbean. Ashton fled into the thick, overgrown woods and, for more than a year, had to claw out a living on the remote strip of land, completely alone and with practically nothing to sustain him. The opportunity to escape came so unexpectedly that Ashton ran off without a gun, a knife, or even a pair of shoes on his feet. Yet the resilient young castaway -- who has been called America's real-life Robinson Crusoe -- was able to find food, build a crude shelter, and even survive a debilitating fever brought on by the cool winter rains before he was rescued by a band of men sailing near the island. 588 0 Online resource; title from digital title page (EBL platform, viewed July 21, 2014). 590 eBooks on EBSCOhost|bEBSCO eBook Subscription Academic Collection - North America 600 10 Ashton, Philip,|d1702-1746.|0https://id.loc.gov/ authorities/names/nr91022151 600 17 Ashton, Philip,|d1702-1746.|2fast|0https://id.worldcat.org /fast/1805513 648 7 18th century|2fast 648 7 1700-1799|2fast 650 0 Pirates|xHistory|0https://id.loc.gov/authorities/subjects/ sh2010106479|y18th century.|0https://id.loc.gov/ authorities/subjects/sh2002012474 650 7 Pirates.|2fast|0https://id.worldcat.org/fast/1064776 650 7 History.|2fast|0https://id.worldcat.org/fast/958235 651 0 Roatán (Honduras)|0https://id.loc.gov/authorities/names/ n2004031237 655 4 Electronic books. 655 7 History.|2fast|0https://id.worldcat.org/fast/1411628 776 08 |iPrint version:|aFlemming, Gregory N.|tAt the Point of a Cutlass : The Pirate Capture, Bold Escape, and Lonely Exile of Philip Ashton.|dLebanon : ForeEdge an Imprint of University Press of New England, ©2014|z9781611685152 |w(DLC) 2013954865|w(OCoLC)863078175 856 40 |uhttps://rider.idm.oclc.org/login?url=http:// search.ebscohost.com/login.aspx?direct=true&scope=site& db=nlebk&AN=761076|zOnline eBook via EBSCO.
