Trade underpinned the growth of Athenian and Roman power, helping to supply armies and cities. It furnished the goods that ancient elites needed to maintain their dominance - and yet, those same elites generally regarded trade and traders as a threat to social order. Trade, like the patterns of consumption that determined its development, was implicated in wider debates about politics, morality and the state of society, just as the expansion of trade in the modern world is presented both as the answer to global poverty and as an instrument of exploitation and cultural imperialism. This 2007 book explores the nature and importance of ancient trade, considering its ecological and cultural significance as well as its economic aspects. 588 0 Print version record. 590 eBooks on EBSCOhost|bEBSCO eBook Subscription Academic Collection - North America 648 7 To 500|2fast 650 0 Commerce|xHistory|yTo 500.|0https://id.loc.gov/authorities /subjects/sh85028903 650 7 Commerce.|2fast|0https://id.worldcat.org/fast/869279 650 7 History.|2fast|0https://id.worldcat.org/fast/958235 650 7 Manners and customs.|2fast|0https://id.worldcat.org/fast/ 1007815 651 0 Mediterranean Region|0https://id.loc.gov/authorities/ subjects/sh85083230|xCommerce|0https://id.loc.gov/ authorities/subjects/sh99001412|xHistory.|0https:// id.loc.gov/authorities/subjects/sh99005024 651 0 Mediterranean Region|0https://id.loc.gov/authorities/ subjects/sh85083230|xSocial life and customs.|0https:// id.loc.gov/authorities/subjects/sh2001008851 651 7 Mediterranean Region.|2fast|0https://id.worldcat.org/fast/ 1239752 655 4 Electronic books. 655 7 History.|2fast|0https://id.worldcat.org/fast/1411628 776 08 |iPrint version:|aMorley, Neville.|tTrade in classical antiquity.|dCambridge : Cambridge University Press, 2007 |z9780521632799|w(DLC) 2007279544|w(OCoLC)60741018 830 0 Key themes in ancient history.|0https://id.loc.gov/ authorities/names/n91095231 856 40 |uhttps://rider.idm.oclc.org/login?url=http:// search.ebscohost.com/login.aspx?direct=true&scope=site& db=nlebk&AN=206759|zOnline eBook via EBSCO.
