This was a time when footbinding spread, and Confucian scholars began to insist that it was better for a widow to starve than to remarry. Yet there were also improvements in women's status in marriage and property rights. In this thoroughly original work, one of the most respected scholars of premodern China brings to life what it was like to be a woman in Sung times, from having a marriage arranged, serving parents-in-law, rearing children, and coping with concubines, to deciding what to do if widowed.Focusing on marriage, Patricia Buckley Ebrey views family life from the perspective of women. She argues that the ideas, attitudes, and practices that constituted marriage shaped women's lives, providing the context in which they could interpret the opportunities open to them, negotiate their relationships with others, and accommodate or resist those around them.Ebrey questions whether women's situations actually deteriorated in the Sung, linking their experiences to widespread social, political, economic, and cultural changes of this period. She draws from advice books, biographies, government documents, and medical treatises to show that although the family continued to be patrilineal and patriarchal, women found ways to exert their power and authority. No other book explores the history of women in pre-twentieth-century China with such energy and depth. 546 English. 588 Description based on print version record and CIP data provided by publisher; resource not viewed. 590 eBooks on EBSCOhost|bEBSCO eBook Subscription Academic Collection - North America 648 7 960-1644|2fast 650 0 Marriage|zChina|xHistory.|0https://id.loc.gov/authorities/ subjects/sh2010100757 650 0 Women|zChina|xSocial conditions.|0https://id.loc.gov/ authorities/subjects/sh2008113628 650 7 Marriage.|2fast|0https://id.worldcat.org/fast/1010443 650 7 History.|2fast|0https://id.worldcat.org/fast/958235 650 7 Women.|2fast|0https://id.worldcat.org/fast/1176568 650 7 Social conditions.|2fast|0https://id.worldcat.org/fast/ 1919811 650 7 Women|xSocial conditions.|2fast|0https://id.worldcat.org/ fast/1176947 650 7 FAMILY & RELATIONSHIPS|xAbuse|xDomestic Partner Abuse. |2bisacsh 650 7 HISTORY|zAsia|xGeneral.|2bisacsh 650 7 Sociology & Social History.|2hilcc 650 7 Social Sciences.|2hilcc 650 7 Family & Marriage.|2hilcc 650 7 Marriage.|2homoit|0https://homosaurus.org/v3/homoit0000990 650 7 Women.|2homoit|0https://homosaurus.org/v3/homoit0001509 650 7 Womyn.|2homoit|0https://homosaurus.org/v3/homoit0001516 651 0 China|xSocial conditions|y960-1644.|0https://id.loc.gov/ authorities/subjects/sh85024181 651 7 China.|2fast|0https://id.worldcat.org/fast/1206073 653 0 Women|aSocial conditions. 653 0 China. 655 0 Electronic books. 655 7 History.|2fast|0https://id.worldcat.org/fast/1411628 776 08 |iPrint version:|tThe inner quarters|dBerkeley : University of California Press, c1993.|z0520081560 (alk. paper)|w(DLC) 92031376 830 0 ACLS Humanities E-Book (Series)|0https://id.loc.gov/ authorities/names/no2012023082 856 40 |uhttps://rider.idm.oclc.org/login?url=https:// search.ebscohost.com/login.aspx?direct=true&scope=site& db=nlebk&AN=9996|zOnline ebook via EBSCO.
