Why and how did so many colonial youth become passionate supporters of Japanese imperial nationalism? And what happened to these youth after the war? Nation-Empire investigates these questions by examining the long-term mobilization of youth in the rural peripheries of Japan, Taiwan, and Korea. Personal stories and village histories vividly show youth's ambitions, emotions, and identities generated in the shifting conditions in each locality. At the same time, Sayaka Chatani unveils an intense ideological mobilization built from diverse contexts--the global rise of youth and agrarian ideals, Japan's strong drive for assimilation and nationalization, and the complex emotions of younger generations in various remote villages. Nation-Empire engages with multiple historical debates. Chatani considers metropole-colony linkages, revealing the core characteristics of the Japanese Empire; discusses youth mobilization, juxtaposing the Japanese seinendan (village youth associations) with the Boy Scouts and the Hitlerjugend; and examines society and individual subjectivities under totalitarian rule. Her book highlights the shifting state-society transactions of the twentieth-century world through the lens of the Japanese Empire, inviting readers to contend with a new approach to, and a bold vision of, empire study. 588 0 Online resource; title from digital title page (viewed on January 08, 2019). 590 eBooks on EBSCOhost|bEBSCO eBook Subscription Academic Collection - North America 648 7 20th century|2fast 648 7 1900-1999|2fast 650 0 Rural youth|0https://id.loc.gov/authorities/subjects/ sh85115937|xPolitical activity|0https://id.loc.gov/ authorities/subjects/sh2002011434|zJapan|0https:// id.loc.gov/authorities/names/n78089021-781|xHistory|y20th century.|0https://id.loc.gov/authorities/subjects/ sh2002006165 650 0 Rural youth|0https://id.loc.gov/authorities/subjects/ sh85115937|xPolitical activity|0https://id.loc.gov/ authorities/subjects/sh2002011434|zTaiwan|0https:// id.loc.gov/authorities/names/n80022631-781|xHistory|y20th century.|0https://id.loc.gov/authorities/subjects/ sh2002006165 650 0 Rural youth|0https://id.loc.gov/authorities/subjects/ sh85115937|xPolitical activity|0https://id.loc.gov/ authorities/subjects/sh2002011434|zKorea (South)|0https:// id.loc.gov/authorities/names/n79126802-781|xHistory|y20th century.|0https://id.loc.gov/authorities/subjects/ sh2002006165 650 0 Young men|0https://id.loc.gov/authorities/subjects/ sh85149285|xPolitical activity|0https://id.loc.gov/ authorities/subjects/sh2002011434|zJapan|0https:// id.loc.gov/authorities/names/n78089021-781|xHistory|y20th century.|0https://id.loc.gov/authorities/subjects/ sh2002006165 650 0 Young men|0https://id.loc.gov/authorities/subjects/ sh85149285|xPolitical activity|0https://id.loc.gov/ authorities/subjects/sh2002011434|zTaiwan|0https:// id.loc.gov/authorities/names/n80022631-781|xHistory|y20th century.|0https://id.loc.gov/authorities/subjects/ sh2002006165 650 0 Young men|0https://id.loc.gov/authorities/subjects/ sh85149285|xPolitical activity|0https://id.loc.gov/ authorities/subjects/sh2002011434|zKorea (South)|0https:// id.loc.gov/authorities/names/n79126802-781|xHistory|y20th century.|0https://id.loc.gov/authorities/subjects/ sh2002006165 650 0 Nationalism|zJapan|xHistory|0https://id.loc.gov/ authorities/subjects/sh2010103292|y20th century.|0https:// id.loc.gov/authorities/subjects/sh2002012476 650 0 Nationalism|0https://id.loc.gov/authorities/subjects/ sh85090150|zTaiwan|0https://id.loc.gov/authorities/names/ n80022631-781|xHistory|y20th century.|0https://id.loc.gov/ authorities/subjects/sh2002006165 650 0 Nationalism|0https://id.loc.gov/authorities/subjects/ sh85090150|zKorea (South)|0https://id.loc.gov/authorities/ names/n79126802-781|xHistory|y20th century.|0https:// id.loc.gov/authorities/subjects/sh2002006165 650 7 Rural youth|xPolitical activity.|2fast|0https:// id.worldcat.org/fast/1101929 650 7 History.|2fast|0https://id.worldcat.org/fast/958235 650 7 Rural youth.|2fast|0https://id.worldcat.org/fast/1101918 650 7 Young men.|2fast|0https://id.worldcat.org/fast/1183263 650 7 Political participation.|2fast|0https://id.worldcat.org/ fast/1069386 650 7 Nationalism.|2fast|0https://id.worldcat.org/fast/1033832 650 7 Colonies.|2fast|0https://id.worldcat.org/fast/868456 651 0 Japan|0https://id.loc.gov/authorities/names/n78089021 |xColonies|xHistory|0https://id.loc.gov/authorities/ subjects/sh2002012516|y20th century.|0https://id.loc.gov/ authorities/subjects/sh2002012476 651 7 Japan.|2fast|0https://id.worldcat.org/fast/1204082 651 7 Taiwan.|2fast|0https://id.worldcat.org/fast/1207854 651 7 Korea (South)|2fast|0https://id.worldcat.org/fast/1206791 655 4 Electronic books. 655 7 History.|2fast|0https://id.worldcat.org/fast/1411628 776 08 |iPrint version:|aChatani, Sayaka.|tNation-empire.|dIthaca : Cornell University Press, 2018|z9781501730757|w(DLC) 2018011988 830 0 Studies of the Weatherhead East Asian Institute, Columbia University.|0https://id.loc.gov/authorities/names/ no2003077547 856 40 |uhttps://rider.idm.oclc.org/login?url=http:// search.ebscohost.com/login.aspx?direct=true&scope=site& db=nlebk&AN=1728021|zOnline ebook via EBSCO.
