Ernst. Ernst's clients included European and American literati and sexual activists, among them Margaret Sanger, James Joyce, and Alfred Kinsey. They, along with a cast of burlesque theater owners and bookstore clerks, had run afoul of strict obscenity laws, and became actors in Ernst's legal theater that ultimately forced the law to recognize people's right to freely consume media. In this book, Brett Gary recovers the critically neglected Ernst as the most important legal defender of literary expression and reproductive rights by the mid-twentieth century. Each chapter centers on one or more key trials from Ernst's career battling censorship and obscenity laws, using them to tell a broader story of cultural changes and conflicts around sex, morality, and free speech ideals. These trials sets the stage, legally and culturally, for the sexual revolution of the 1960s and beyond. In the latter half of the century, the courts had a powerful body of precedents, many owing to Ernst's courtroom successes, that recognized adult interests in sexuality, women's needs for reproductive control, and the legitimacy of sexual inquiry"--|cProvided by the publisher. 588 0 Online resource; title from title screen (viewed August 25, 2021). 590 eBooks on EBSCOhost|bEBSCO eBook Subscription Academic Collection - North America 600 10 Ernst, Morris L.|q(Morris Leopold),|d1888-1976.|0https:// id.loc.gov/authorities/names/n50012300 600 17 Ernst, Morris L.|q(Morris Leopold),|d1888-1976.|2fast |0https://id.worldcat.org/fast/1433014 648 7 20th century|2fast 648 7 1900-1999|2fast 650 0 Trials (Obscenity)|0https://id.loc.gov/authorities/ subjects/sh85137372|zNew York (State)|zNew York|0https:// id.loc.gov/authorities/names/n79007751-781|xHistory|y20th century.|0https://id.loc.gov/authorities/subjects/ sh2002006165 650 0 Trials (Obscenity)|0https://id.loc.gov/authorities/ subjects/sh85137372|zUnited States|0https://id.loc.gov/ authorities/names/n78095330-781|xHistory|y20th century. |0https://id.loc.gov/authorities/subjects/sh2002006165 650 0 Obscenity (Law)|zUnited States|0https://id.loc.gov/ authorities/subjects/sh2008108557|xHistory|y20th century. |0https://id.loc.gov/authorities/subjects/sh2002006165 650 0 Censorship|zUnited States|0https://id.loc.gov/authorities/ subjects/sh2008100252|xHistory|y20th century.|0https:// id.loc.gov/authorities/subjects/sh2002006165 650 0 Sexual rights|0https://id.loc.gov/authorities/subjects/ sh2009007727|zUnited States|0https://id.loc.gov/ authorities/names/n78095330-781|xHistory|y20th century. |0https://id.loc.gov/authorities/subjects/sh2002006165 650 7 Trials (Obscenity)|2fast|0https://id.worldcat.org/fast/ 1156379 650 7 History.|2fast|0https://id.worldcat.org/fast/958235 650 7 Obscenity (Law)|2fast|0https://id.worldcat.org/fast/ 1042937 650 7 Censorship.|2fast|0https://id.worldcat.org/fast/850568 650 7 Sexual rights.|2fast|0https://id.worldcat.org/fast/1748883 650 7 Censorship.|2homoit|0https://homosaurus.org/v3/ homoit0000245 651 7 New York (State)|zNew York.|2fast|0https://id.worldcat.org /fast/1204333 651 7 United States.|2fast|0https://id.worldcat.org/fast/1204155 655 0 Electronic books. 655 7 History.|2fast|0https://id.worldcat.org/fast/1411628 776 08 |iPrint version:|aGary, Brett.|tDirty works.|dStanford, California : Stanford University Press, [2021] |z9781503627598|w(DLC) 2020052598|w(OCoLC)1224044805 856 40 |uhttps://rider.idm.oclc.org/login?url=https:// search.ebscohost.com/login.aspx?direct=true&scope=site& db=nlebk&AN=2954293|zOnline ebook via EBSCO.
