Immediately after the trial, some of the convicted defendants received conditional pardons, but Mother Jones and eleven others remained in custody until early May. This arrest and conviction came in the latter years of Mother Jones's long career as a labor agitator. Eighty-one and feisty as ever, she was able to focus national attention on the miners' cause and on the governor's tactics for handling the dispute. Over the course of seven months, more than two hundred civilians were tried by courts-martial. Only during the Civil War and Reconstruction had the courts been used so extensively against private citizens, and the trial raised a number of civil rights issues. The national outcry over Mother Jones's imprisonment led the United States Senate to appoint a subcommittee to examine mining conditions in West Virginia - the first Senate subcommittee ever appointed to investigate a labor controversy. Public sentiment eventually forced a release of the prisoners and brought about a settlement of the strike. In the face of this overwhelmingly adverse publicity, the governor suppressed publication of the trial transcript, and it was long thought to have been destroyed. 590 eBooks on EBSCOhost|bEBSCO eBook Subscription Academic Collection - North America 600 10 Jones,|cMother,|d1837-1930|0https://id.loc.gov/authorities /names/n80002291|xTrials, litigation, etc.|0https:// id.loc.gov/authorities/subjects/sh99002033 600 17 Jones,|cMother,|d1837-1930.|2fast|0https://id.worldcat.org /fast/1730605 610 20 United Mine Workers of America|0https://id.loc.gov/ authorities/names/n50062445|xHistory.|0https://id.loc.gov/ authorities/subjects/sh99005024 610 27 United Mine Workers of America.|2fast|0https:// id.worldcat.org/fast/515758 650 0 Strikes and lockouts|xMiners|0https://id.loc.gov/ authorities/subjects/sh85128833|zWest Virginia.|0https:// id.loc.gov/authorities/names/n79059831-781 650 0 Courts-martial and courts of inquiry|0https://id.loc.gov/ authorities/subjects/sh85033588|zWest Virginia.|0https:// id.loc.gov/authorities/names/n79059831-781 650 7 History.|2fast|0https://id.worldcat.org/fast/958235 650 7 Strikes and lockouts|xMiners.|2fast|0https:// id.worldcat.org/fast/1135156 650 7 Courts-martial and courts of inquiry.|2fast|0https:// id.worldcat.org/fast/881868 651 7 West Virginia.|2fast|0https://id.worldcat.org/fast/1205316 655 4 Electronic books. 655 7 History.|2fast|0https://id.worldcat.org/fast/1411628 655 7 Trials, litigation, etc.|2fast|0https://id.worldcat.org/ fast/1423712 700 1 Steel, Edward M. 776 08 |iPrint version:|tCourt-martial of Mother Jones. |dLexington, Kentucky : The University Press of Kentucky, c1995|hxii, 319 pages|z9780813119410|w95011135 856 40 |uhttps://rider.idm.oclc.org/login?url=http:// search.ebscohost.com/login.aspx?direct=true&scope=site& db=nlebk&AN=938132|zOnline eBook.
