For chorus (SATB), vocal soloists (STB (Wq 244, 242, 241) or SATB (Wq 243)), and orchestra with continuo.
Wq 244 (H. 803) given in the Berlin version; the final movement is BWV 342 by J.S. Bach, to which C.P.E. Bach added flutes.
Wq 242, 241, and 243 (H. 804, 805, and 807) are pasticcios; Wq 242 contains music by C.P.E. Bach, J.S. Bach, C.H. Graun, and Homilius; Wq. 241 and 243 contain new and previously composed music by C.P.E. Bach and harmonizations, possibly by C.P.E. Bach or others, of previously existing chorale melodies.
Wq 242 (H. 804) contains the opening chorus from J.S. Bach's Weichnachtsoratorium (movement 1), newly composed recitatives by C.P.E. Bach (movements 2 and 4), an aria taken from C.H.Graun's Italian cantata Fidi compagni a suon di tromba, GraunWV B:III:27, using a new German text (movement 3), an aria borrowed from the cantata Uns schützet Israels Gott, HoWV II.78, by Homilius (movement 5), and a harmonization of unknown origin of the chorale melody Wie schön leuchtet der Morgenstern (movement 6).
Wq 241 (H. 805) contains 3 different chorale melody harmonizations of unknown origin of Nun danket alle Gott (movements 1, 5 and 9), newly composed recitatives by C.P.E. Bach (movements 4 and 7), a borrowed recitative from Wq 242 (H. 804) (movement 2), music for an aria composed by C.P.E. Bach for the Einführungsmusik Palm, H. 821a (movement 6), and the arietta and double-choir work Heilig, Wq 217 (H. 778) (movement 8).
Wq 243 (H. 807) contains a newly composed aria (movement 3), a composite movement for chorus containing a chorus originally composed for the Einführungsmusik Hornbostel, H. 821e, transposed up a whole step, and an arrangement of the song Halleluja, Jesus lebet, Wq 198/14 (H. 752/14) (movement 1), newly composed recitatives (movements 2, 4, and 6), an aria used in several earlier works (movement 5), a chorus incorporating music originally used for a Magnificat in 1749 (movement 7), and a chorale melody harmonization of unknown origin (movement 8).
Appendix A contains harmonizations by Telemann of choral melodies used in different performing versions of Wq 244; appendix B contains the original setting by Graun of the aria Fende il sol con suoi bei raggi from GraunWV B:III:27; appendix C contains Amen! Lob und Preis und Stärke, Wq 226 (H. 834), used as a replacement chorus for the opening chorale in Wq 241 (H. 805).
