Summary Dr. Katherine Maynard lectures about the power of music and its emotional effects. She discusses the connections between music, art and ideas and how these connections are used to sell ideas and change the world in ways small and large. Her focus is mainly on the theme from the tone poem Zarathustra by Friedrich Nietzsche, and the music Zaratustra by Richard Strauss. Showing excerpt from various movies she explains to her student audience "how music, art and ideas can be also altered or appropriated to different needs". She speaks about the movie "2001: a space odyssey", and how director Stanley Kubrick has successfully used the new version of the Strauss's music to make a powerful statement about the future technology. She also speaks about Elvis Presley and Andy Kaufman and how they have used the same music to empower their artistic acts. She closes her lecture by playing the Zaratustra in Jazz by the musical band Fish.
Local Note Moore Library also holds a DVD copy, made by the Moore Library, under the same call number.
