It was through the Nordic classical movement that Scandinavian architecture first attracted international attention. It was the Nordic Pavilions, rather than Le Corbusier's modernism, which generated most admiration at the 1925 World Fair, and it was the Nordic classical architects - including Gunnar Asplund, Sigurd Lewerentz, and Alvar Aalto - who went on to establish Scandinavia's reputation for modern design. Yet this brief classical movement was quickly eclipsed by the rise of international modernism, and has often been overlooked in architectural studies. The book explores the lives and works of various key contributors to Nordic classicism - with eleven chapters each focussing on a different architect and on one of the period's outstanding works (including the Stockholm Central Library, the Resurrection Chapel, and the Woodland Cemetery). Famous architects and their works are examined alongside many lesser-known examples, to provide a comprehensive and in-depth account. As we approach the centenary of many of the events to which the book refers, now is a timely opportunity to explore the key themes of the Nordic classical movement, its architects, their buildings and the social and cultural changes to which they were responding."-- Bloomsbury Publishing 588 0 Print version record. 590 eBooks on EBSCOhost|bEBSCO eBook Subscription Academic Collection - North America 650 0 Classicism in architecture|0https://id.loc.gov/authorities /subjects/sh85026715|zScandinavia.|0https://id.loc.gov/ authorities/subjects/sh85117937-781 650 0 Architecture|0https://id.loc.gov/authorities/subjects/ sh85006611|zScandinavia|0https://id.loc.gov/authorities/ subjects/sh85117937-781|xHistory.|0https://id.loc.gov/ authorities/subjects/sh99005024 650 7 Classicism in architecture.|2fast|0https://id.worldcat.org /fast/863561 650 7 Architecture.|2fast|0https://id.worldcat.org/fast/813346 650 7 History.|2fast|0https://id.worldcat.org/fast/958235 650 7 ARCHITECTURE|xAdaptive Reuse & Renovation.|2bisacsh 650 7 ARCHITECTURE|xBuildings|xLandmarks & Monuments.|2bisacsh 650 7 ARCHITECTURE|xProfessional Practice.|2bisacsh 650 7 ARCHITECTURE|xReference.|2bisacsh 651 7 Scandinavia.|2fast|0https://id.worldcat.org/fast/1242804 655 0 Electronic books. 655 4 Electronic books. 655 7 History.|2fast|0https://id.worldcat.org/fast/1411628 776 08 |iPrint version:|aStewart, John (Architect).|tNordic classicism.|dNew York : Bloomsbury Academic, 2018 |z9781350044227|w(DLC) 2018014443|w(OCoLC)1027117092 856 40 |uhttps://rider.idm.oclc.org/login?url=https:// search.ebscohost.com/login.aspx?direct=true&scope=site& db=nlebk&AN=1847847|zOnline ebook via EBSCO.
