Keesling lends new insight into the origins of civic honorific portraits that emerged at the end of the fifth century BC in ancient Greece. Surveying the subjects, motives and display contexts of Archaic and Classical portrait sculpture, she demonstrates that the phenomenon of portrait representation in Greek culture is complex and without a single, unifying history. Bringing a multi-disciplinary approach to the topic, Keesling grounds her study in contemporary texts such as Herodotus' Histories and situates portrait representation within the context of contemporary debates about the nature of arete (excellence), the value of historical commemoration and the relationship between the human individual and the gods and heroes. She argues that often the goal of Classical portraiture was to link the individual to divine or heroic models. Offering an overview of the role of portraits in Archaic and Classical Greece, her study includes local histories of the development of Greek portraiture in sanctuaries such as Olympia, Delphi and the Athenian Acropolis"--Provided by publisher. 588 0 Online resource; title from PDF title page (EBSCO, viewed May 12, 2017). 590 eBooks on EBSCOhost|bEBSCO eBook Subscription Academic Collection - North America 650 0 Portrait sculpture, Greek.|0https://id.loc.gov/authorities /subjects/sh85105174 650 0 Portrait sculpture, Ancient|0https://id.loc.gov/ authorities/subjects/sh85105162|zGreece.|0https:// id.loc.gov/authorities/names/n80046090-781 650 0 Portraits|0https://id.loc.gov/authorities/subjects/ sh85105182|xSocial aspects|0https://id.loc.gov/authorities /subjects/sh00002758|zGreece|0https://id.loc.gov/ authorities/names/n80046090-781|xHistory.|0https:// id.loc.gov/authorities/subjects/sh99005024 650 0 Monuments|zGreece|0https://id.loc.gov/authorities/subjects /sh97008523|xHistory.|0https://id.loc.gov/authorities/ subjects/sh99005024 650 0 Excellence|0https://id.loc.gov/authorities/subjects/ sh85046205|xSocial aspects|0https://id.loc.gov/authorities /subjects/sh00002758|zGreece|0https://id.loc.gov/ authorities/names/n80046090-781|xHistory.|0https:// id.loc.gov/authorities/subjects/sh99005024 650 0 Gods, Greek|0https://id.loc.gov/authorities/subjects/ sh85055622|xSocial aspects|0https://id.loc.gov/authorities /subjects/sh00002758|xHistory.|0https://id.loc.gov/ authorities/subjects/sh99005024 650 0 Heroes|0https://id.loc.gov/authorities/subjects/sh85060430 |xSocial aspects|0https://id.loc.gov/authorities/subjects/ sh00002758|zGreece|0https://id.loc.gov/authorities/names/ n80046090-781|xHistory.|0https://id.loc.gov/authorities/ subjects/sh99005024 650 7 Portrait sculpture, Greek.|2fast|0https://id.worldcat.org/ fast/1072303 650 7 Portrait sculpture, Ancient.|2fast|0https:// id.worldcat.org/fast/1072286 650 7 Portraits|xSocial aspects.|2fast|0https://id.worldcat.org/ fast/1072331 650 7 History.|2fast|0https://id.worldcat.org/fast/958235 650 7 Portraits.|2fast|0https://id.worldcat.org/fast/1072324 650 7 Monuments.|2fast|0https://id.worldcat.org/fast/1025892 650 7 Excellence.|2fast|0https://id.worldcat.org/fast/917593 650 7 Social aspects.|2fast|0https://id.worldcat.org/fast/ 1354981 650 7 Antiquities.|2fast|0https://id.worldcat.org/fast/810745 650 7 Manners and customs.|2fast|0https://id.worldcat.org/fast/ 1007815 650 7 Historiography.|2fast|0https://id.worldcat.org/fast/958221 650 7 Gods, Greek.|2fast|0https://id.worldcat.org/fast/944264 650 7 ART|xHistory|xAncient & Classical.|2bisacsh 650 7 Heroes.|2fast|0https://id.worldcat.org/fast/955558 650 7 ART|xSculpture & Installation.|2bisacsh 651 0 Greece|xAntiquities.|0https://id.loc.gov/authorities/ subjects/sh85057037 651 0 Greece|xSocial life and customs.|0https://id.loc.gov/ authorities/subjects/sh85057131 651 0 Greece|xHistoriography.|0https://id.loc.gov/authorities/ subjects/sh2008115278 651 7 Greece.|2fast|0https://id.worldcat.org/fast/1208380 655 7 History.|2fast|0https://id.worldcat.org/fast/1411628 776 08 |iPrint version:|z9781107162235 856 40 |uhttps://rider.idm.oclc.org/login?url=https:// search.ebscohost.com/login.aspx?direct=true&scope=site& db=nlebk&AN=1512512|zOnline ebook via EBSCO.
