These are utterances with a variable interrogative tag, like It's peculiar writing, isn't it, and the semi-variable tag innit, such as Nice, innit. The aim is to provide a corpus -based, comprehensive semantic-pragmatic typology of British English tag questions. Compared to existing descriptions, the proposed typology is novel in three ways. Firstly, whereas almost all existing typologies are single-layered classifications, the functions of tag questions are categorized into two parallel dimensions of interpersonal meaning: the speech function and the stance layer. Secondly, semantic generalizations are proposed for clusters of grammatical, intonational and conversational properties. Thirdly, the bottom-up description is based on a sizeable amount of authentic, spontaneous conversations, which are analysed both qualitatively and quantitatively"- -|cProvided by publisher. 588 0 Online resource; title from digital title page (viewed on June 28, 2018). 590 eBooks on EBSCOhost|bEBSCO eBook Subscription Academic Collection - North America 650 0 English language|xInterrogative.|0https://id.loc.gov/ authorities/subjects/sh85043596 650 0 English language|xSpoken English.|0https://id.loc.gov/ authorities/subjects/sh85043702 650 0 English language|xIntonation.|0https://id.loc.gov/ authorities/subjects/sh85043597 650 0 English language|xSentences.|0https://id.loc.gov/ authorities/subjects/sh85043692 650 7 English language|xInterrogative.|2fast|0https:// id.worldcat.org/fast/911321 650 7 English language|xSpoken English.|2fast|0https:// id.worldcat.org/fast/911654 650 7 English language|xIntonation.|2fast|0https:// id.worldcat.org/fast/911322 650 7 English language|xSentences.|2fast|0https:// id.worldcat.org/fast/911637 655 4 Electronic books. 776 08 |iPrint version:|aKimps, Ditte.|tTag questions in conversation.|dAmsterdam ; Philadelphia : John Benjamins Publishing Company, [2018]|z9789027200433|w(DLC) 2017057761 830 0 Studies in corpus linguistics ;|0https://id.loc.gov/ authorities/names/n98023070|vv. 83. 856 40 |uhttps://rider.idm.oclc.org/login?url=http:// search.ebscohost.com/login.aspx?direct=true&scope=site& db=nlebk&AN=1808478|zOnline eBook via EBSCO.
