Crime Wave's comic plot is simple: aspiring screenwriter Steven Penny, played by Paizs, finds himself able to write only the beginnings and endings of his scripts, but never (as he puts it) "the stuff in-between." Penny is the classic writer suffering from writer's block, but the viewer sees him as the (anti)hero in a film told through stylistic parody of 1940s and 50s B-movies, TV sitcoms, and educational films. In John Paizs's 'Crime Wave, ' writer and filmmaker Jonathan Ball offers the first book-length study of this curious Canadian film, which self- consciously establishes itself simultaneously as following, but standing apart from, American cinematic and television conventions. Paizs's own story mirrors that of Steven Penny: both find themselves at once drawn to American culture and wanting to subvert its dominance. Exploring Paizs's postmodern aesthetic and his use of pastiche as a cinematic technique, Ball establishes Crime Wave as an overlooked but important cult classic. 588 Description based on print version record. 590 eBooks on EBSCOhost|bEBSCO eBook Subscription Academic Collection - North America 600 10 Paizs, John|0https://id.loc.gov/authorities/names/ no2014037723|xCriticism and interpretation.|0https:// id.loc.gov/authorities/subjects/sh99005576 600 14 Paizs, John. 600 17 Paizs, John.|2fast|0https://id.worldcat.org/fast/1993353 630 00 Crime wave (Motion picture) 650 0 Cult films|0https://id.loc.gov/authorities/subjects/ sh2007004880|zCanada.|0https://id.loc.gov/authorities/ names/n79007233-781 650 0 Motion pictures, Canadian.|0https://id.loc.gov/authorities /subjects/sh85088114 650 7 Criticism and interpretation.|2fast|0https:// id.worldcat.org/fast/1198648 650 7 Cult films.|2fast|0https://id.worldcat.org/fast/1744415 650 7 Motion pictures, Canadian.|2fast|0https://id.worldcat.org/ fast/1027490 651 7 Canada.|2fast|0https://id.worldcat.org/fast/1204310 655 0 Electronic books. 655 4 Electronic books. 776 08 |iPrint version:|aBall, Jonathan, 1979-, author.|tJohn Paizs's Crime wave|z9781442648128|w(OCoLC)865495487 830 0 Canadian cinema ;|0https://id.loc.gov/authorities/names/ no2008186559|v11. 856 40 |uhttps://rider.idm.oclc.org/login?url=http:// search.ebscohost.com/login.aspx?direct=true&scope=site& db=nlebk&AN=693857|zOnline eBook.
