Bats, beetles, wolves, butterflies, bulls, panthers, apes, leopards and spiders are among the countless creatures that crowd the pages of literature of the late nineteenth century. Whether in Gothic novels, science fiction, fantasy, fairy tales, journalism, political discourse, realism or naturalism, the line between the human and the animal becomes blurred. Beastly Journeys examines these bestial transformations across a range of well-known and less familiar texts and shows how they are provoked not only by the mutations of Darwinism but by social and economic shifts that have been lost in retellings and readings of them. The physical alterations described by George Gissing, George MacDonald, Arthur Machen, Arthur Morrison, W.T. Stead, Bram Stoker, H.G. Wells, Oscar Wilde, and many of their contemporaries, are responses to changes in the social body as Britain underwent a series of social and economic crises. Metaphors of travel - social, spatial, temporal, mythical and psychological - keep these stories on the move, confusing literary genres along with the indeterminacy of physical shape that they relate. Beastly Journeys will appeal to anyone interested in the relationship between nineteenth-century literature and its contexts and especially to those interested in the fin de siècle and in metaphors of travel, animals and shape- changing. 542 1 |fThis work is licensed by Knowledge Unlatched under a Creative Commons license|uhttp://creativecommons.org/ licenses/by-nc-nd/4.0 546 English. 588 0 Print version record. 590 eBooks on EBSCOhost|bEBSCO eBook Subscription Academic Collection - North America 590 JSTOR|bBooks at JSTOR Open Access 648 7 19th century|2fast 648 7 1800-1899|2fast 650 0 English literature|y19th century|xHistory and criticism. |0https://id.loc.gov/authorities/subjects/sh2008102754 650 0 Literature and society|zGreat Britain|xHistory|y19th century.|0https://id.loc.gov/authorities/subjects/ sh2008107031 650 0 Animals in literature.|0https://id.loc.gov/authorities/ subjects/sh85005284 650 0 Travel in literature.|0https://id.loc.gov/authorities/ subjects/sh85137162 650 0 Shapeshifting.|0https://id.loc.gov/authorities/subjects/ sh2009005575 650 7 English literature.|2fast|0https://id.worldcat.org/fast/ 911989 650 7 Literature and society.|2fast|0https://id.worldcat.org/ fast/1000096 650 7 History.|2fast|0https://id.worldcat.org/fast/958235 650 7 Animals in literature.|2fast|0https://id.worldcat.org/fast /809580 650 7 Travel in literature.|2fast|0https://id.worldcat.org/fast/ 1155640 650 7 Shapeshifting.|2fast|0https://id.worldcat.org/fast/1748560 651 7 Great Britain.|2fast|0https://id.worldcat.org/fast/1204623 653 literature. 653 modern history. 655 0 Electronic books. 655 4 Electronic books. 655 7 Criticism, interpretation, etc.|2fast|0https:// id.worldcat.org/fast/1411635 655 7 History.|2fast|0https://id.worldcat.org/fast/1411628 776 08 |iPrint version:|aYoungs, Tim, 1961-|tBeastly journeys. |dLiverpool : Liverpool University Press, 2013 |z9781846319587|w(OCoLC)857110258 830 0 Liverpool English texts and studies ;|0https://id.loc.gov/ authorities/names/n89642148|v63. 856 40 |uhttps://www.jstor.org/stable/10.2307/j.ctt5vjbg0|zOnline ebook.
