Does it require explicit engagement with events and situations with the aim of bringing about change or highlighting social wrongs? Is it purely a matter of content or is it also a matter of structure? This text examines the politics of contemporary 'political' drama. It traces the origins of the contemporary British political play to the emergence of the idea of 'serious drama' in the late 19th century through the work of Bernard Shaw, and argues that a Shavian version of serious drama was inextricably linked to the social and political structures of British society at the time. 520 "What does it mean for a play to be political in the 21st century? Does it require explicit engagement with events and situations with the aim of bringing about change or highlighting social wrongs? Is it purely a matter of content or is it also a matter of structure? The Contemporary Political Play: Rethinking Dramaturgical Structure examines the politics of contemporary 'political' drama. It traces the origins of the contemporary British political play to the emergence of the idea of 'serious drama' in the late 19th century through the work of Bernard Shaw, and argues that a Shavian version of serious drama was inextricably linked to the social and political structures of British society at the time. While political drama is still often thought of as adhering to a Shavian model in which social issues are presented through a dialectical structure, Grochala argues that the different political structures of contemporary Britain give rise to formally inventive dramaturgies that are no less 'serious' or political than their Shavian forebears. Through analysing the experimental dramaturgies of contemporary plays by playwrights including Caryl Churchill, Simon Stephens, Anthony Neilson, debbie tucker green and Mark Ravenhill, among others, it offers a set of new principles for understanding how a play functions politically and reveals how today the dramaturgical structure of a play is as political as its content"--|cProvided by publisher. 588 Description based on print version record. 590 eBooks on EBSCOhost|bEBSCO eBook Subscription Academic Collection - North America 648 7 21st century|2fast 648 7 2000-2099|2fast 650 0 Political plays, English|xHistory and criticism.|0https:// id.loc.gov/authorities/subjects/sh2008109667 650 0 English drama|y21st century|0https://id.loc.gov/ authorities/subjects/sh99010782|xHistory and criticism. |0https://id.loc.gov/authorities/subjects/sh99001187 650 0 Experimental drama, English|0https://id.loc.gov/ authorities/subjects/sh96007732|xHistory and criticism. |0https://id.loc.gov/authorities/subjects/sh99001187 650 0 Politics and literature|0https://id.loc.gov/authorities/ subjects/sh85104470|zGreat Britain|0https://id.loc.gov/ authorities/names/n79023147-781|xHistory|y21st century. |0https://id.loc.gov/authorities/subjects/sh2002006168 650 7 Political plays, English.|2fast|0https://id.worldcat.org/ fast/1069494 650 7 English drama.|2fast|0https://id.worldcat.org/fast/910737 650 7 Experimental drama, English.|2fast|0https:// id.worldcat.org/fast/918419 650 7 Politics and literature.|2fast|0https://id.worldcat.org/ fast/1069960 650 7 Literary studies: plays & playwrights.|2bicssc 650 7 History.|2fast|0https://id.worldcat.org/fast/958235 650 7 Theatre studies.|2bicssc 650 7 American drama.|2fast|0https://id.worldcat.org/fast/806998 650 7 Political plays.|2fast|0https://id.worldcat.org/fast/ 1069480 650 7 LITERARY CRITICISM|xDrama.|2bisacsh 650 7 PERFORMING ARTS|xTheater|xHistory & Criticism.|2bisacsh 650 7 PERFORMING ARTS|xTheater|xPlaywriting.|2bisacsh 650 7 Literature.|2eflch 650 7 Literature.|2ukslc 651 7 Great Britain.|2fast|0https://id.worldcat.org/fast/1204623 655 0 Electronic books. 655 4 Electronic books. 655 7 History.|2fast|0https://id.worldcat.org/fast/1411628 655 7 Criticism, interpretation, etc.|2fast|0https:// id.worldcat.org/fast/1411635 776 08 |iPrint version:|aGrochala, Sarah,|tContemporary political play|z9781472588463|w(DLC) 2016038196|w(OCoLC)984149017 830 0 Bloomsbury Methuen drama.|0https://id.loc.gov/authorities/ names/no2014121159 856 40 |uhttps://rider.idm.oclc.org/login?url=https:// search.ebscohost.com/login.aspx?direct=true&scope=site& db=nlebk&AN=1481693|zOnline ebook via EBSCO.
