Danish culture and politics were influenced in this period by the country's deeply ambivalent relationship with Germany. Brandes and Nielsen, both of whom lived and worked in Germany for significant periods of time, were seen as dangerously cosmopolitan by the Danish public, even while they served as international cultural ambassadors for the very society that rejected them during their lifetimes. Allen argues that they were the prototypical representatives of a socially liberal and culturally modern "Danishness" (Danskhed) that Denmark itself only gradually (and later) grew into. This lively study brings its central characters to life while offering an original, thought provoking analysis of the origins and permutations of Danish modernism and Danish national identity--issues that continue to be significant in today's multi-ethnic Denmark. Icons of Danish Modernity is a book about the uneasy waves that arise when celebrities take on national symbolism, and the beginnings of this formula in the early twentieth century. Julie K. Allen is associate professor of Scandinavian studies at the University of Wisconsin, Madison."Allen weaves a compelling cultural analysis about national identity and its mores. The juxtaposition of the works of Georg Brandes and Asta Nielsen is highly original and Allen's contribution offers a much-needed introduction to an English reading audience of these important cultural figures."--Karin Sanders, University of California, Berkeley"--|cProvided by publisher. 520 "Utilizes the lives of literary critic Georg Brandes and silent film star Asta Nielsen to explore questions of national identity in early twentieth-century Denmark"-- |cProvided by publisher. 588 0 Print version record. 590 eBooks on EBSCOhost|bEBSCO eBook Subscription Academic Collection - North America 600 10 Brandes, Georg,|d1842-1927|0https://id.loc.gov/authorities /names/n79085023|xCriticism and interpretation.|0https:// id.loc.gov/authorities/subjects/sh99005576 600 10 Brandes, Georg,|d1842-1927|0https://id.loc.gov/authorities /names/n79085023|xFriends and associates.|0https:// id.loc.gov/authorities/subjects/sh00005818 600 10 Nielsen, Asta,|d1881-1972|0https://id.loc.gov/authorities/ names/n82162114|xFriends and associates.|0https:// id.loc.gov/authorities/subjects/sh00005818 600 17 Brandes, Georg,|d1842-1927.|2fast|0https://id.worldcat.org /fast/1797626 600 17 Nielsen, Asta,|d1881-1972.|2fast|0https://id.worldcat.org/ fast/103092 648 7 20th century|2fast 650 0 National characteristics, Scandinavia. 650 7 Criticism and interpretation.|2fast|0https:// id.worldcat.org/fast/1198648 650 7 Friends and associates.|2fast|0https://id.worldcat.org/ fast/1353140 650 7 Civilization.|2fast|0https://id.worldcat.org/fast/862898 650 7 Intellectual life.|2fast|0https://id.worldcat.org/fast/ 975769 651 0 Denmark|xCivilization|y20th century.|0https://id.loc.gov/ authorities/subjects/sh85036740 651 0 Denmark|0https://id.loc.gov/authorities/names/n79021597 |xIntellectual life|y20th century.|0https://id.loc.gov/ authorities/subjects/sh00006346 651 7 Denmark.|2fast|0https://id.worldcat.org/fast/1204558 655 0 Electronic books. 655 4 Electronic books. 776 08 |iPrint version:|aAllen, Julie K.|tIcons of Danish modernity.|dSeattle : University of Washington Press ; Copenhagen : Museum Tusculanum Press, 2012|z9780295992204 |w(DLC) 2012018870|w(OCoLC)785080390 830 0 New directions in Scandinavian studies.|0https:// id.loc.gov/authorities/names/n2006004390 856 40 |uhttps://rider.idm.oclc.org/login?url=http:// search.ebscohost.com/login.aspx?direct=true&scope=site& db=nlebk&AN=607560|zOnline eBook.
