Obesity contributes to diabetes, cardiovascular disease, and some cancers, among other diseases. Although many people are aware of obesity's causes and consequences, few see it as a problem for their own families--despite clinical evidence to the contrary. Given this disconnect between perception and reality, policy makers in both countries struggle to find a way to reach people to encourage change. The IOM brought together policy makers from the U.K. and U.S. for a workshop on October 22, 2009, to discuss the challenges of and promising approaches to the struggle against obesity. Presenters spoke about current policies, programs, and partnerships that are addressing the obesity epidemic and evidence for effective strategies to change perception and behaviors. The workshop, summarized in this document, provided an opportunity for both countries to learn from each other's efforts and to consider how to apply new strategies at home. 588 0 Print version record. 590 eBooks on EBSCOhost|bEBSCO eBook Subscription Academic Collection - North America 650 0 Obesity|zUnited States|0https://id.loc.gov/authorities/ subjects/sh2010104110|vCongresses.|0https://id.loc.gov/ authorities/subjects/sh99001533 650 0 Obesity|0https://id.loc.gov/authorities/subjects/ sh85093646|zGreat Britain|0https://id.loc.gov/authorities/ names/n79023147-781|vCongresses.|0https://id.loc.gov/ authorities/subjects/sh99001533 650 0 Obesity|0https://id.loc.gov/authorities/subjects/ sh85093646|xGovernment policy|0https://id.loc.gov/ authorities/subjects/sh99005269|zUnited States|0https:// id.loc.gov/authorities/names/n78095330-781|vCongresses. |0https://id.loc.gov/authorities/subjects/sh99001533 650 0 Obesity|0https://id.loc.gov/authorities/subjects/ sh85093646|xGovernment policy|0https://id.loc.gov/ authorities/subjects/sh99005269|zGreat Britain|0https:// id.loc.gov/authorities/names/n79023147-781|vCongresses. |0https://id.loc.gov/authorities/subjects/sh99001533 650 7 Obesity.|2fast|0https://id.worldcat.org/fast/1042738 650 7 Government policy.|2fast|0https://id.worldcat.org/fast/ 1353198 650 12 Obesity|xprevention & control.|0https://id.nlm.nih.gov/ mesh/D009765Q000517 651 2 United Kingdom.|0https://id.nlm.nih.gov/mesh/D006113 651 2 United States.|0https://id.nlm.nih.gov/mesh/D014481 650 22 Adolescent.|0https://id.nlm.nih.gov/mesh/D000293 650 22 Child.|0https://id.nlm.nih.gov/mesh/D002648 650 22 Diet|xstandards.|0https://id.nlm.nih.gov/mesh/ D004032Q000592 650 22 Health Education|xmethods.|0https://id.nlm.nih.gov/mesh/ D006266Q000379 650 22 Health Promotion|xmethods.|0https://id.nlm.nih.gov/mesh/ D006293Q000379 650 22 Public Policy.|0https://id.nlm.nih.gov/mesh/D011640 650 22 Schools|xstandards.|0https://id.nlm.nih.gov/mesh/ D012574Q000592 651 7 United States.|2fast|0https://id.worldcat.org/fast/1204155 651 7 Great Britain.|2fast|0https://id.worldcat.org/fast/1204623 655 2 Congress.|0https://id.nlm.nih.gov/mesh/D016423 655 4 Electronic books. 655 7 Conference papers and proceedings.|2lcgft|0https:// id.loc.gov/authorities/genreForms/gf2014026068 655 7 Conference papers and proceedings.|2fast|0https:// id.worldcat.org/fast/1423772 700 1 Whitacre, Paula.|0https://id.loc.gov/authorities/names/ nr2001001997 700 1 Burns, Annina Catherine.|0https://id.loc.gov/authorities/ names/n2009184553 710 2 Institute of Medicine (U.S.).|bStanding Committee on Childhood Obesity Prevention.|0https://id.loc.gov/ authorities/names/no2010118638 776 08 |iPrint version:|tPerspectives from United Kingdom and United States policy makers on obesity prevention. |dWashington, D.C. : National Academies Press, ©2010 |z9780309150781|w(OCoLC)612335770 856 40 |uhttps://rider.idm.oclc.org/login?url=http:// search.ebscohost.com/login.aspx?direct=true&scope=site& db=nlebk&AN=338813|zOnline eBook.
