But few people know that Timbuktu was only one of many centers of Islamic learning in precolonial West Africa. This book analyses the rise and transformation of Arabo-Islamic erudition in West Africa from the beginning of the spread of Islam through the colonial period to the twenty-first century. It highlights the contribution of Muslim scholars in the production and transmission of knowledge and in shaping state and society in West Africa. It argues that no study of the history of education or knowledge production in West Africa will be complete unless it pays attention to this intellectual tradition. The book further shows how European colonialism obstructs historiography so that we know so little about it. Finally, the book analyze the transformation of West African educational system, in the twentieth and twenty first century and shows that far from declining, the Islamic tradition of West Africa has gained vitality in the postcolonial period."--|cProvided by publisher. 588 0 Print version record. 590 eBooks on EBSCOhost|bEBSCO eBook Subscription Academic Collection - North America 650 0 Islamic learning and scholarship|0https://id.loc.gov/ authorities/subjects/sh85068458|zAfrica, West|0https:// id.loc.gov/authorities/subjects/sh85001688-781|xHistory. |0https://id.loc.gov/authorities/subjects/sh99005024 650 0 Islamic learning and scholarship|0https://id.loc.gov/ authorities/subjects/sh85068458|zMali|zTombouctou|0https:/ /id.loc.gov/authorities/names/n82085135-781|xHistory. |0https://id.loc.gov/authorities/subjects/sh99005024 650 0 Education|zAfrica, West|0https://id.loc.gov/authorities/ subjects/sh2009100054|xHistory.|0https://id.loc.gov/ authorities/subjects/sh99005024 650 0 Education|xPolitical aspects|0https://id.loc.gov/ authorities/subjects/sh85104469|zAfrica, West|0https:// id.loc.gov/authorities/subjects/sh85001688-781|xHistory. |0https://id.loc.gov/authorities/subjects/sh99005024 650 7 Islamic learning and scholarship.|2fast|0https:// id.worldcat.org/fast/979968 650 7 History.|2fast|0https://id.worldcat.org/fast/958235 650 7 Education.|2fast|0https://id.worldcat.org/fast/902499 650 7 Education|xPolitical aspects.|2fast|0https:// id.worldcat.org/fast/902728 650 7 Intellectual life.|2fast|0https://id.worldcat.org/fast/ 975769 650 7 Civilization.|2fast|0https://id.worldcat.org/fast/862898 651 0 Africa, West|0https://id.loc.gov/authorities/subjects/ sh85001688|xIntellectual life.|0https://id.loc.gov/ authorities/subjects/sh99005642 651 0 Africa, West|xCivilization|0https://id.loc.gov/authorities /subjects/sh85001691|xIslamic influences.|0https:// id.loc.gov/authorities/subjects/sh00006431 651 7 West Africa.|2fast|0https://id.worldcat.org/fast/1239521 651 7 Mali|zTombouctou.|2fast|0https://id.worldcat.org/fast/ 1220600 655 4 Electronic books. 655 7 History.|2fast|0https://id.worldcat.org/fast/1411628 776 08 |iPrint version:|aKane, Ousmane.|tBeyond Timbuktu. |dCambridge, Massachusetts : Harvard University Press, 2016|z9780674050822|w(DLC) 2015050589|w(OCoLC)926061414 856 40 |uhttps://rider.idm.oclc.org/login?url=http:// search.ebscohost.com/login.aspx?direct=true&scope=site& db=nlebk&AN=1241551|zOnline eBook via EBSCO.
